Question about reputation points.

A teammate under the CD user name 647techangel recently posted a somewhat opinionated post about the IR Board. A user of high reputation neg repped him and now he is 38 points in the red. While I dont agree with what he said, I'm not sure the neg repping was an appropiate response considering major hit on his rep. How does one recover from this sort of event?

They're just dots ... I wouldn't worry too much about them.

I would look at what prompted the neg rep to see what caused it. High rep posters have generally been around and don't give out neg rep "just because they want to"

I think the neg repping for that particular post was not for the opinion, it was for how it was said. Not being the one who gave it (I have yet to give neg rep, though I have thought about it at times, and I hope I never do give it), I don't know for certain. But if it was for the "tone" of the post, it was probably deserved. Certainly whoever gave it thought it was. See, we don't mind opinions necessarily. We do tend to prefer that they be expressed in a polite manner.

Definitely look at the reason for the reputation. Think about why you got it. Act on the reason if it's valid (which it probably is).
Edit: I just remembered this: if you are still unsure why you got it after you read the reason, there is a "reply" button next to the rep which allows you to send a PM to the person who gave it to you and ask for further details.

I'll talk to him about it, though I think it was more a random spurt of improperly channeled frustration resulting ffrom several of the other team members joking about how he fried a component or two on our IR Board and other unrelated stressors on the team itself. Thanks for the replies.

Somewhat related question. Where is the neg. rep button? In the corner of each post I see a "add to so and so's reputation" "spotlight post" (still don't know what this one does), and a "report post" button.

If you click on the scale, you can choose to give negative, postive, and nuetral rep points.

Click the add to reputation and then you'll see positive, neutral or negative.

The add to so-and-so's post link is where you would give neg rep (I believe)

The "spotlight this post button allows you to submit the qoute to be displayed at the top of CD. If you scroll all the way up youll see one that was spotlighted.

It is never good to take out frustrations in ChiefDelphi. Members of FIRST teams understand and appreciate the fact that there are times when the team can struggle with frustrations and that individuals also have frustrations. It is better to calm down, maybe get some rest, take a deep breath or step away from the stress factor for a bit. Then collect your thoughts. One way to do that is to write the post in Word and then copy/paste it after you have proofed it and evaluated how well the post conveys your thoughts - not your frustrations but your thoughts or questions.

Your team mate will improve the rep status with consistent posts that contribute to threads in a positive manner. It may take time but he/she can work at it. Teasing is a hard thing to contend with esp. when you are working hard to contribute to the build. It can have negative repercussions as noted here.

One recovers from this sort of event by reading and taking the above suggestions, mainly concerned with how to post. It helps a lot to write your post elsewhere, and copy it in.

Then again, one can also recover if a "high reputation" member decides to add some positive rep. I mean, think about it... everyone deserves a second chance.

Wow! That must have been some spelling error! Did the givers of the negative rep really say they were giving it to you for bad spelling? Now bad grammar I could see, but bad spelling, never!
