Mobile CD application?

I tried CD for the first time this weekend on my mobile phone (Verizon Mobile Web) and it basically stinks... lol

Everything that shows up on the normal website tried to download onto my phone, and it took forever (pics, text, etc, etc...) (good thing I have unlimited data plan.) I waited forever just to read a thread after I finally got past the portal.

Anyways, is there a text only way to get to CD, and read threads?

Also, I couldn't post anything either. I hit Reply but couldn't because the box to enter text in couldn't be selected.

I know this is more of a mobile phone compatibility issue since the lame iPhone was able to do what I wanted, but is there any hope for us who don't use an iPhone?

Just wondering.

Re: Mobile CD application?

There's a printable version of each thread, which is much more compact, but there doesn't appear to be an equivalent for the portal, which means that it's still a pain to navigate around.

For what it's worth, reading CD as-is on Internet Explorer Mobile is pretty terrible. It takes forever to load because it wants to load everything, and it likes to force me to scroll back and forth to read paragraphs. Brandon, does vB have a mode that plays nicely with mobile devices?

Re: Mobile CD application?

Mine also throws everything from separate columns (such as how the portal is set up with 3) all in one... I scroll through all the stuff on the left and middle before I actually get to the important stuff to me (re: recent threads)

I've noticed this on my phone with every site that is set up for wide screens (my.ebay) page was especially annoying to deal with).

BTW, I have the Samsung U900 (Aka: Flipshot) if that matters any.

Speaking of mobile compatibility with CD, is there any way to directly upload mobile phone pictures to CD as well?

Could there be?

Re: Mobile CD application?

Let me introduce you to Opera Mini. I use it on my phone, and you can change the picture quality to adjust speeds and you can reply to topics. I've done this before with my Sanyo M1 for Sprint. I can load Chief Delphi in about 15 seconds (from the time I enter the address to the time it is fully loaded). I use media picture quality, and low for travel as many places don't have fast web speed.

Too bad Verizon doesn't have Java on their phones . Otherwise that would work.

I have this same issue on mine..... My scroll speed is terribly slow as well, checking CD involves at least 15 seconds of scrolling per page.

If I have my pocket pc on me, i usually check on that as CD works much better.

It'd be really awesome to get a CD mobile working though....

Re: Mobile CD application?

At least when it comes to reading threads on a cell phone, you can use the archived pages on Chief Delphi. They are just text.

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/archive/index.php/

But as for an entire, "real Internet" experience, the iPhone and iPod Touch are currently the only devices that I know of that allow you to achieve this. (Though several other smart phone companies are working on this feature as well). Every other cell phone only has a limited Internet experience, and the websites that give you more control often have to write their own cell phone applications to do so.

The only thing Brandon could do is install an iPhone or generic cell phone mod to vBulletin, to redirect all cell-phone traffic to a minimalistic version of Chief Delphi.

I'll need to find a good iPhone/mobile theme .. one of the 2 Art posted are good, but the big issue is with all the custom CD stuff (CD-Media, CD-Events, etc), it may be a weird experience. I'll give it a try in the next few days and see if we can't get something good for this weekends regionals.

And as Art pointed out .. the Archive is a good text-only version of the threads.

I really like the look of the digg iPhone application. It is very good for a mobile platform.

Re: Mobile CD application?

I have a Blacberry Curve 8310, and CD comes up pretty good. I admit that there is a lot of scrolling, but itaks not too bad, it could be a lot worse. The cool thing about the Blackberry browser is that they have a zoomed in view that will display the actual page how it would look on a desktop or laptop. I do have to say that it would be to have a slightly easierr way to view some pages on my Blackbetry.
