That's a picture of our 2005 OI.
We have done the same thing with our 2 shiny new joysticks each year; rip the handles off and stuff the wires inside. This mod lets us drive with our thumbs, giving far better feel than using the whole handle.
This gives you better feel with out costing a thing. (Other than the time required to take apart the joystick. But that's offset by the fun of destroying something!)

I like drifting, but I have to go WRC. Putting a car where it doesn't belong feels right, like combining together drill motors and power window motors and putting them on a big patch of carpet.
