Re: mic on coaches?
"whatever happens on the field, stays on the field"
my definition of GP is "you compete like crazy ON THE FIELD, but respect the other teams OFF THE FIELD" just liek some teams help their oponants during time outs other teams disrespect their oponiants on the field, which frankly, im fine with. |

Re: mic on coaches?
Those planning on recording their alliance zone conversations should get permission from the event directors first. There are rules against communication devices, and it should be made clear that this is recording, not transmitting to someone else. Also, radio communication is prohibited so as to not interfere with the field controls. You would either need to get the radio channel cleared by the technical folks, or use a self-contained recorder.

That being said, last year we were subject to a team that was explicitly told by their coach to ram us as hard as they could and push us over the side wall. It happens. Even though their drivers came up and apologized after the fact, it was still a rough move. Things will happen in the heat of the match. I've heard drivers yelling at their coaches (when it's supposed to be the other way around), coaches from other teams yelling degradingly at their partners, you name it. While I think it would be interesting for more people to be exposed to the high-stress environment behind the glass, I don't think the majority of FIRSTers (think of the parents and such) would benefit from it. |

Re: mic on coaches?
At Wisconsin this year, some UWM Journalism students did a piece on 1675 and first. They mic our drive team for one of the quarter final matches. I think it turned out well.

Re: mic on coaches?
Maybe as a later date thing, but I agree. I would rather hear the announcer give a play by play then 6 coaches yelling during a match. I do think it would be cool to do a kind of documentary of a match with the coach narrating. Whoever thought up of that, It's a cool idea!

Re: mic on coaches?
This would rock. At least once this year I was literally yelling to our operator to pull our grabber in (for fear of entangling with another robot), when there wasn't a robot there. I was seeing the reflection of a robot off the center divider. The operator had a better view, knew there wasn't any danger, and thought I was loosing it. There was a moment hesitation when he said something back to me just as I realized what was going on. I don't remember the exact expletive I used at that moment, but if it were captured, I'm pretty sure it would have to be edited at the end of the year. It wasn't directed at anybody or anything except my own ignorance!
We shoot video of the matches from the stands and I'm sure we could sink up what people in the stands saw with what I was telling the drive team to do. It would make for a bit of a humorous year-end video for those that knew the background. I also agree with Andy, even in the heat of the battle a good coach can keep the excitement going, but still maintain control. If the coaches are 'loosing it' on the field then it sets a very bad example for the students and other teams. I don't think having a mic on me would change my coaching style, but it might make me a little more verbally artistic! ![]() |

Re: mic on coaches?
I always sing the Rocky theme to my driver. But sometimes I make beach sounds, it depends on how tense the situation.

Re: mic on coaches?
As a coach, I would be OK recording my comments but I wouldn't want a live feed. While I can only remember using an expletive once while coaching (that was in 2004 at Pittsbrugh, when two robots fell from the bar at basically the same time, with us still hanging but taking both of them atop our robot as they fell: "Oh #@$%!") it is one comment I wouldn't want broadcast to the world. But hearing myself coaching would probably make me better at coaching. I know that listening to recordings of lectures I have given and discussions I have lead has made me better at both.

Re: mic on coaches?
No one ever said if this happened it would have to be truely live.
Anyone hear of a 10 second delay for editing purposes in a clinch? "Colorful": language is just a byproduct of being in the players' station at times. Actually it's a byproduct of being invovled in the Pit Area as well... Or.. moreso.. being involved in the whole stessful build season as well... Or... during queing... Let's face it, off beat language is just one of the few "bad" byproducts of the overall picture within this competition based environment we have in FIRST - but there are plenty of good byproducts to outweigh these bad ones. It happens, and while when that colorful language is used in excess it could put a damper on the overall feel of the event, it's bound to happen, and you just have to accept it and roll with it. There is one mindset of thinking that states that the reason swearing or other colorful language is so taboo is that people make a big deal over it. I tend to agree with that. If it wasn't made such a big deal, no one would notice it. Same with regional music. If a swear word is used in a song, most people wouldn't even regard it unless someone made a big fuss over it, and intentially brought it up and then it would be known & the music then targeted as "evil". lol Same with this recording of players' stations. I would personally want to hear the recording uncut & raw, but would also have the option to have an edited version for people who know they would get offended at the stress driven language. Also, if I heard a person who I thought was a great coach in FIRST using some off language in the players' station, I wouldn't blacklist them from working with them because everyone has their own style, and if it works for them, then so be it. Re: mic on coaches?
WARNING: This is a drawn out personal opinion that is a tangent to the current thread. If you do not want to take a detour from the topic of this thread, do not read.
In my opinion, we shouldn't have coaches on the field. At least not as they are now. We should have a student there with the task of inter-team discussions. Having coaches out on the field, just takes away a job from the students. Also, whenever I hear someone cursing, it suggests to me that that person is not that inteligent. I am not saying that that is always the case. It just gives others a negative view of you. Avoid it, and you have nothing to worry about. Also, if you tell your driver wreak another bot, then you don't belong in FIRST. I am not saying that you can't build robots and have fun. Just join BattleBots instead. Also, if other teams continually damage your bot every year, it might have to do with your design style. Try building a more sturdy bot. |
