What's a hinge?

My students asked me if a hinge is a fastener, and I just laughed and changed the subject (that's what I do when I don't know the answer to a question). Is a hinge a fastener or an illegal part? I looked through the previous fastener questions in the forum, but the answer did not present itself.

I am sorry, I thought for sure I remember having hinges in the kit (simple hinges I mean, not the 4 bar ones). But, they are not on the list, so they didn't make the kit boxes.

At this point, I suppose that it is water over the dam.

How do folks want to work this?

Leave it alone, or add simple hinges to the additional hardware list.

I can go either way.

Make your case if you have strong feelings either way.

The default will be no change, so the 'add 'em' folks will have to make the strongest case.

Joe, I think hinges would be a great addition. To be completely honest, we already had hinges in our plan but it never occured to me that they weren't in the kit because if I'm not mistaken they were there last year. Correct? anyhow, to help us all out, I think we should add them. and as far as the air valves--I'll have a part number and cost for you on the 18th of november.

Joe, It's simple.....add them as extra hardware. they ARE fasteners afterall. Besides, we need them! I think they were on the list last year.

I'm not sure that I would agree that hinges are a fastener, but I cannot see any downside to adding them to the additional hardware list.

It's getting late already. We would have liked to have had a hinge yesterday but we had to find another
way. If you are going to 'add 'em', add 'em quick. Otherwise it will be to the detriment of the quickest teams.

Failing to hear any opposition to adding hinges (and no, I would not have ruled that they were in as a fastener), the are officially 'IN.'

Following addition is made to the Additional Hardware List:

Simple Hinges with hinge pins less than 4.5 inches long and 3/8 inches in diameter (this easily includes the hinges on the conference room door just outside my office) are allowed to be used without limit on quantity.

Before anyone asks, Hinges with integral springs are not allowed.
