New Series

Who's the best robot builder in the land? A brand new television
series on TLC will answer this quesition. If you think you've got
the right stuff to design, build and operate a robot, please send

TLC's robot challenge series will feature six different
competitions, ranging from speed to strength to intelligence.
Twenty-four robot designers and operators will be selected from
thousands of entries to travel to Los Angeles, California, where
they will compete for the title of champion. Camera crews will
also travel to your hometown to profile your life and your robot.
The series will air nationally on TLC.

Now thats what I'm talking about. I would sign up for it...but there is one tiny little problem. I'm not a robot designer just yet, just a junior in high school. One question: did they think of this on their own, or did they see what FIRST was doing and decide to do a little spin-off?

I called the phone number listed on the TLC-Junkyard Wars site.

Basically, the producer (Andrew Greenberger) told me that he was very familiar with FIRST. In fact, it seems he was involved in a documentary about FIRST a couple years back (I don't know if it ever aired on TV, but it featured an all girls school from Philly and the TechnoKats -- I have seen parts of it, but never the whole thing).

Anyway... He knows about FIRST.

Also, he said that they have not even sent out applications at this point. They should be going out soon.

One drawback to this whole deal is that the competition will be held on the left coast some time in Feb. Not exactly the least busy time for a potential FIRST team interested in testing the waters. Ah well...

... Maybe after I retire...
