New team numbers

Posted by Patrick Dingle.

Student on team TBA from Cornell University / Ithaca High School sponsored by Cornell University.

I was just wondering... Does anyone know why rookie teams are being assigned 4-digit team numbers this year? All of them seem to start with 5, too. It seems strange.

Jess. I saw the same thing on the USFIRST page, its on one of the links. Dont remember where though.
I thought that there possibly was a glitch in the # but it now seems that 4 digits is what their using?

I first saw it on the list of NASA Sponsorship Recipients, and later when we submitted our application for our team - we were given 5526 Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but strange. Is there anyone that knows the reason?

That's odd....perhaps they are preparing for more teams in the future? I dunno...but since out numbers are what alot of us are known by...I dunno, remembering a 4 digit one just seems to be overkill. And think of the numbers on the side of the bot! Eeek...

The human mind can pretty much remember seven numbers fairly easily (witness social security numbers and phone numbers as two examples) so four shouldn't be too bad......

I think that the team numbers have been corrupted in some manner.

Some designation that FIRST has put on the end (perhap to indicate which regional they are attending or some other bit of info -- perhaps even some info non-sense like the ASCII code for the first initial of the team leader for that team) seems to have been added to each team's 'true' number.

For instance, team 530 has a code of '9' following it and becomes team #5309.

This is my guess anyway.

It could be that FIRST has decided to go with 4 digit numbers but I just don't see the reasoning as of now.

So...

Until I see a 4 digit team number whose first 3 digits repeat some other valid FIRST team number, I am sticking with my theory.

Thoughts? Theories? Better Ideas? Do tell...

Joe J.

I noticed today that on the NASA recipient list, there are two teams with the first three digits the same. Think it's possible these are just temporary numbers until FIRST knows how many teams there will be this year?

Katherine,

Welcome. You needn't worry about folks letting you know if you do or say something stupid. Believe me, THEY WILL LET YOU KNOW ;-)

Actually, we are a pretty tame crowd here abouts. We all are better off if we all share what we think and know. Pipe up whenever the mode strikes you...

Welcome again.

Regards,

Joe J.
