How many teams?

Well,

Registration is finally over, so after looking at the 'remaining capacities list' on FIRST's site, it seems there are a total of 6 spots left, four at NYC and 2 at Lonestar. Even the nationals was filled to capacity, even though there isn't supposed to be a cap for nationals. So, how many teams do you think there are gonna be this year, and how many at nats? And how many new teams do you think there are out there?

So how does that affect FIRST's growth rate? I've only been in statistics for a short time, but 525 after the number we had last year sounds like a dissappointing number. Of course, I don't know exactly the number of teams we had last year that we're working with, or the exact growth rate, so maybe I'm jumping the gun. Could we find that out?

According to the FIRST page, there were 373 teams in the 2000 Competition. So that would be an increase of 152, using Dr Joe's figure...

LOL, I realise that you're guessing (as well as the rest of the people who responded, though I really can't answer for them), I was just pondering that if that answer was the real answer, how that would affect our growth rate.

But, I agree, we shall know soon enough.

: Registration is finally over, so after looking at the 'remaining capacities list' on FIRST's site, it seems there are a total of 6 spots left, four at NYC and 2 at Lonestar. Even the nationals was filled to capacity, even though there isn't supposed to be a cap for nationals. So, how many teams do you think there are gonna be this year, and how many at nats? And how many new teams do you think there are out there?

Well, let's see....

Last year, out of the 373 teams nationwide, 268 attended the National Competition...

268 / 373 = 71.849%

Now, just for the sake of argument, let's say that FIRST gets their expected 350(I think that was the number) teams in Florida this year...

350 / X = 71.849%

Sooo.....solving for X, it would say 487 teams. However, that does seem a little low...

So, let's look at it another way...

From '99 to '00, we went from 269 teams to 373, roughly a 40% increase(373/269 = 1.4) If we apply that again for this year, we get 522. So, if the math holds up, you could say somewhere around 500 teams(somewhat close to the average of my 2 numbers). BUT, I remember teams posting here saying that they had already handed out team #500, so my rough estimate would be 550 teams. We'll see...

Nate

:they had already handed out team #500,

thing to remember-- these days we keep our numbers... so if teams from previous years drop out, their number isn't given away... there will be less teams than there are team numbers-- just keep that in mind

I spoke to Lori a while back about the National Capacity. She said that even though there is no official limit, they were using 340 as the number they compared to. However, they may still have gone over that number by a little bit. But then again, every year more teams register than actually show up at nationals and even at some regionals.

A while back I also did a quick analysis of the numbers since the beginning of FIRST. I plotted a curve, and from that I predicted a round number of 480 total and 320 at nationals. I will be happy to be wrong if we go over those numbers. But to answer the question about growth rate, my guesses were base on the trend from the past years.

Getting excited yet?

Raul
