Anyone lucky enough to land tickets to the At The Gates reunion tour this summer? I'm ticked the nearest show was NYC and that it sold out.

Re: Like Metal?

Man...I can't wait until I'm actually able to go to concerts...Oh well, I'll have to settle for YouTube instead for now...

Anyway, I'm not into the real heavy stuff yet, but I have a couple of bands I have interest in:

Disturbed (I'm looking forward to their newest album, due in early June. It's supposed to be their heaviest album to date...look for the single Inside the Fire for a little taste of the album)

Iron Maiden

Metallica (Fade To Black was what got me into liking music at all, but I like all of their classics at this point, and even some the stuff from when they worked with the SF orchestra)

SOAD

Trivium (not all songs, but some like the MOP cover, and Anthem...)

Shadows Fall

And, my one of my latest favorites, Five Finger Death Punch (listen to White Knuckles, possibly one of the best songs they have)

There are a number of bands I don't care if people call metal even though they aren't. Nickelback, however, in no way, shape, or form should ever be called anything remotely close to metal. Nickelback is not metal. Rise Against and Evanesence aren't really metal either, being Hardcore and Alternative Rock respectively, but they are closer than Nickelback.

Music is a VERY amorphous thing. What you may think is "metal" I may not and visa versa. Careful what labels you put on stuff, because i've heard that robotics is "nerdy", "geeky" and "uncool," but i know they don't know what they are talking about. Not going to argue about it. I'm just going to prove them wrong ;-)

I know, thus why I had been pretty chill about what was labeled as metal or not for most of the thread. But Nickelback just seemed far enough out that, well, argh! I've had pretty extensive debates regarding whether or not Evanesence is metal (as well as several of the other bands in this thread), and I would have let it hang, but the Nickelback just shocked me...

Re: Like Metal?

This is what my Itunes said, not my opinion. It could be wrong. I agree with wilsonmw04, though its all kinda up to interpertation, though. I really like Evanaesance, especiallly the lead singer's voice. I was raised on rock and roll, a lot of classic stuff, and 80's rock, so it all kind of blends to me. I like rock, metal, punk, alternaive, death metal. That's why i listed those in particular.

Re: Like Metal?

Metal rulz! Just when they think its dead it comes back stronger...

I used to watch the Headbangers Ball ever week back when MTV was good.
I'm more oldschool... Metallica, Sabbath, Rob Zombie, and yes even Mega Death.
Of course I was in the KISS army back in the day

I like my metal heavier, darker, but can listen to the thrash, speed, and jap stuff too.

I actually like many different music genes except... disco and that rap crap.
Nice to see not all of FIRST a bunch of YMCA'ers

Hey Sean, what are your thoughts on mathcore (I loathe to use this term, but it's simple)? I.E. Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc.

I typically just refer to most of those bands as hardcore, but I'm not really into hardcore that much, so I don't really know the sub-genres that well. I pretty much just differentiate hardcore into hardcore, post-hardcore, and metalcore, but other subgenres most likely exist for those more familiar with the genre.
Based on the name of the genre, it's most likely a hardcore version of "math rock", which is basically post-rock with more complicated time signatures and rhythms (often much more technical too). This makes sense, given that all the bands you listed I've also heard described as post-hardcore.

Re: Like Metal?

Not to mention that CDDB or Itunes often places an artist in different genres for different albums. Most of the current "European Metal" bands are categorized under: goth metal, black metal, symphonic metal, folk metal, dark metal, etc.

The thing about it is, hardcore and post hardcore are such blanket terms. If someone has a preconceived notion about a genre such as hardcore, and they're recommended a band that's technically hardcore, but barely fits within the genre, that could lead to bias before that person has even given the band a chance.

On a somewhat similar note, I fail to see why people even use the term 'post-hardcore'. The definition for the genre is incredibly vague and almost all encompassing for certain musical styles.

On another somewhat related note, you've seriously heard those bands referred to as post-hardcore? Wow, that's terrible. The only one that, I'm pretty sure at least, even comes close to fitting that classification is Protest the Hero.

But yes, links for those of you that don't know.

Protest the Hero - Wretch
The Dillinger Escape Plan's PureVolume page.
Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession

EDIT: I also must thank you, Sean. You've given me inspiration for the AP Comp paper I have to write.
