On a somewhat similar note, I fail to see why people even use the term 'post-hardcore'. The definition for the genre is incredibly vague and almost all encompassing for certain musical styles.

On another somewhat related note, you've seriously heard those bands referred to as post-hardcore? Wow, that's terrible. The only one that, I'm pretty sure at least, even comes close to fitting that classification is Protest the Hero.

But yes, links for those of you that don't know.

Protest the Hero - Wretch
The Dillinger Escape Plan's PureVolume page.
Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession

EDIT: I also must thank you, Sean. You've given me inspiration for the AP Comp paper I have to write.

Hardcore (as well as post-hardcore and metalcore) are generic blanket terms, but I'm not really a huge fan of the genre. As a result I'm rather uneducated on the sub-genres and what differentiates them from one another. I wouldn't expect a metal outsider to be able to identify the differences between Doom and Sludge Metal, or tell me if a band is Melodic Death, Black, or Death Metal.

As for post-hardcore, at least from an outsiders view, it seem an appropriate tag. While a little bit broad, especially when you count the off-shoot genres of emo/screamo, it has some merit. It describes hardcore bands which stray from the typically hardcore "rules". Break-strains aren't essential, much more experimentation exists, and there's very heavy use of dissonance (which is my biggest turn-off from the genre, I hate over-used dissonance). Most of these bands lack attributes to be really described as "progressive" (nor does the progressive tag frequently mix with the hardcore). Aspects of hardcore and punk still exist (namely in terms of the speed and vocal styles), but they are no longer binding rules that hold the genre together.
If you want more insight I might have to talk to my roommate, he's a pretty big post-hardcore/emo/screamo fan.

Re: Like Metal?

I agree with you, for the most part. You've really gotta know the intricacies of a genre to correctly classify something into the incredibly obscure subgenres.

Just a thought, though. Be careful about the use of emo/screamo. They've become incredibly generic terms due to the third wave of emo that started in the early-mid 90's. They've become quite encompassing, so the genre really doesn't have a specific sound or defining quality anymore. A lot of music elitists are almost offended at the usage of the term as a genre.

To make this an analogy: post-hardcore is like that butcher down the street that specializes in certain meats, whereas emo/screamo is Wal-Mart.

I wouldn't say metal is my favorite type of music, but I do like Underoath a lot and metal concerts are extremely fun to chill/mosh at.

I want to, Slipknot and Disturbed as headliners? I would be there in an instant...but the closest venue to me is in Buffalo, and that is WAY too far for my parents to drive me...

Anyway, I would like to take this thread into a bit of a different direction; i.e., what made you get into metal? For me, I would have to say it was because of the mainstream music. I didn't have any like in music until middle school, and up until that point I had the mainstream music (rap, r&b, soft rock, alt, etc) shoved down my throat, so I found something different, which was metal...and I've liked it since.

So, what made YOU like metal?

My friend Adam dropped all of his music from his iPod onto my computer, and I started listening to it. That got me into metal. Most of it was Metallica and System of a Down. I now enjoy all kinds of metal.

Re: Like Metal?

Ok Metal Heads, I need some help. I was inspired by this thread to do some google searching. Apparently frequent searches for 12V motors and a few select key words made google think these guys were the best fit. So what does the Metal community think of 16Volt? Good Metal, or just some guys playing loud and screaming... even if it isn't good metal, it does have a catchy hook to it (first starts 1:24 into video).
Warning, they do one of those anouncers preaching for the first 40 seconds before they kick it into gear.
