Re: Ftc Kick off 2008

I agree with smartkid, how about a little description, or waiting until the game is announced to all of us before you guys start talking about the game on here please.

Re: Ftc Kick off 2008

Clicking the red box at the bottom of the blog reveals the front page of the game manual, with a brief overview. Looks legit but could be a really good imitation.

Re: Ftc Kick off 2008

Relax -- it looks legit.

Some regions had events where they were showing the game animation, field, and game pieces today. This is clearly a picture of a flyer from one of those events. I guess they took down the video as a courtesy -- that, or FIRST threatened to taunt them a second time, or some such.

Regardless, FTC doesn't have quite the time constraints that FRC does, so I personally wouldn't get too worked up about this being a prank, nor about some teams getting to see the game early, whether via an event or a leak.

A day or two in FTC just isn't a big deal. I personally have very little faith that things will actually be posted by 5:00pm, so I don't really plan to start downloading and reading until tomorrow morning anyway.

After which I look forward to a rewarding season of higher prices for field and robot parts, less variety of mechanisms, and more questionable maturity of wireless control platforms as compared to last year.

Not that I'm pessimistic. :-)

Wow, talk about timing, I must say good job to FTC for this one. I logged at 5 PM exactly, and bam, the game was there. .

And i enjoyed. .

Check out the robot requirements in Section 4. Seems like...there are some issues with the file, or something wrong with pdf reader.

Anyone have a different version that doesn't do this and wants to post it up? Or post on FIRST forums.

Are you using an Apple computer? I have the same problem when viewing the document with Apple Preview. This problem does not appear when viewed with Adobe Acrobat on my Apple.

Re: Ftc Kick off 2008

Earlier in this thread there was discussion over the new award for design using the Aluminum and Plexiglas components and the effect that would have on "table top" teams that don't have access to workshops.

Now that we've seen the rules, I have to say that it seems that the restriction on bonding... no welding, glues, or anything from outside the kit... places some limits on how much of an advantage the teams with shop access have. Much of what you can do with these materials under these conditions is not outside the grasp of a patient "table top" team with an eye for detail.... and a lot of time with a hacksaw blade, vise, hand drill and some fine files.

Kudos to the FTC GDC for allowing a little bit of shop work without upsetting the balance too far in favour of the shops.

Jason

I agree, the 1/16" max thickness was VERY nice to see. Now I have a question: Is this going to be a permanent addition to the rules or is this just to carry us over until they flesh out the kit for future games?

In general, I am very excited about the unique challenges in the game this year. Robustness is going to be a much bigger factor than it has in previous years.

If you come to a FRC event to see a robot competition, you are missing the point.

I guess they'll wait for some feedback from this season. I'm hoping they keep the addition.
