We have the same problem with the ball sitting down in the goal. What I question is how large was that ball at kick off. Was it inflated right as per the rules? I do not think so.

As for the fittings you want the smooth ones. Schedule 40 pipes come in two flavors, drain and supply. The key point is the schedule 40 style. Drain are white, supply are tan or off white.

Make sure your cuts are true. Use a table saw to get the connectors accurate. File the edges to remove burrs. Assemble the T'S first making sure you bottom out the connectors in the fittings - this is important for if you do not insert all the way you will be longer and have a larger opening when done.
