Go to Post To put it simply, its clearly become this. The teams that can score a lot, do well. Rather shocking, isn't it? It doesn't matter if you're a shooter, dumper, power dumper, gravity dumper, spitter, flinger, dunker, shumper, barfer, dropper, or whatchamacallit. Points are points. - Looking Forward [more]

Helmet Cam??

Posted by Ryan Shanley at 1/15/2001 1:11 PM EST

Student on team #191, The X-Cats, from Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School and Xerox.

Being up late at night working on FIRST has proven to breed strange ideas through the years, and one night, some of us/we (my grammar is not as impressive as my engineering) X-Cats were wondering when FIRST was going to catch up with professional sports by installing cameras on robots during the matches. How cool would it be to see a match from the perspective of a robot??

I believe the exact description we used that night was... "HARDCORE!!!"

but anyways, just a suggestion...anyone have other ideas to jazz up the FIRST experience??

peace
ryan

Well last year at our post-season competition we mounted a small camera on our robot, but it didnt work as well as we wanted it to, but we are working on it as of now to get it on this years bot, depending on our weight factor, becuz last year our robot weighed an exact 130 lbs so camera wasnt on for regionals and nationals hehe

Ryan,

This has been done in the past. My team have never done it thought so I can't make any recomendations on cameras. But I would guess just look @ the frequency that the wireless camera uses and make sure it stays out of the range of the controls and u should be all set. The one chaveat is to call FIRST or tell them at a competition to make sure they're offically okay with it. Off the top of my head the X-Cam might not be a bad choice.

Although it's great to have a camera in every robot, it's going to be difficult for every team to keep the camera saftly in their robot. This reminds me when they first bring out the light to every team and made them put it on. I know the camera is not as big and heavy as the light, but it's a weak and delicate device compare to the robot parts. And FIRST are going to want to have rules that make team locate and support that camera in certain place in their robot, which mean more trouble for theams than they already have.

I dunno, with robot moving around crashing and pushing, it's going to be hard for everyone to keep the camera safe.

Time permitting we will play around with mounting a camera on the robot. We have an inexpensive camera that is .75 x .75 x 3.5 inches and weighs less than 2 oz. It is a color camera with mike and has a 2.2 ghz transmitter and rechargeble battery all build in.
