Average match score?!?!

Posted by colleen -- T190 at 1/16/2001 6:36 PM EST

Engineer on team #190, Gompei, from Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science and WPI.

So what does everyone think the average match score will be?

How many points to teams think they'll be scoring in each match??

I think there will be a clear line between teams that can balance goals and those who can't..

: So what does everyone think the average match score will be?

I think that many teams (if put with the right teams) will be able to get up to around 300 points give or take a few. I doesn't seem to hard to for 4 teams to do something in a min. or so.

3 robots + strecher = 40
one robot balancing 2 goals = x4
doing it fast = x3 or x2.5
total = 480 or 400

Am I the only one that thinks this sounds like a bad Visa card commercial?

: 3 robots + strecher = 40
: one robot balancing 2 goals = x4
: doing it fast = x3 or x2.5
: total = 480 or 400

And the ending line:
The FIRST Experience = priceless

Matt

Hehe.. yer right.

I expect at a minimum the scores will be much higher than most of these estimates. After all, just getting 3 robots in the endzone and two goals on a balanced ramp, in one minute without any balls at all is worth 300 points. Filling up a goal from the player's station with 4 people doing it? 15 seconds. Time to get three robots over the ramp and reset the ramp back? More then 15 seconds. So if nothing else is done, and one goal full of black balls is added to the one minute scenerio, then the price goes up to 420 points.

We think the possibilities are even higher than this.

I think the mean will be about 200 but the median will be only about 120. The big difference is because there will often be big scoring matches up to around 500, which will drive the average up a lot. Meanwhile the more common, lower scoring matches will have a much lesser effect on the mean.

Now let's see if i'm even close to being right

I agree that there will be large difference between the mean and the median.

I agree, by just being able to balance 1 goal, you can easily turn a 100 point match into a 200 point match. If your robot can balance two goals effectively, there shouldn't be very many matches where you score less than 200 points.

I vote for a very much lower average score than most of
the other postings.

I suppose that teams will only get the "double double"
about 1/3 of the times. This immedately cuts the
scores in 2/3 of the matches to something under 300 or
so max and that only if they get a "single double" plus
end the match early. The rewards are such that it
almost always make sense to keep playing if you think
you can get one more double before time runs out.

SO... I expect that even though teams see that they
only get the double double about 1/3 of the time, they
will still spend a lot of time TRYING to get the double
double, but failing.

Bottom line:

Average score and median score between 50 and 100
points. Closer to 50 at the early regionals, close to
100 nearer to and at the Nationals.

Counter analysis welcome.

Joe J.

It seems to me that teams can easily get 120 or 100 points if they even have a decend robot, just by getting all the robot right to the end zone and all hit the stop button. I know there are going to be choas in the player's station, but the bottom line is, the teams should compare their strategy with this 100/120 point strategy, and if there is a risk of not making as high, they should just go for the 120/100 points. And because of your prediction of around 20% robots will go under the bars, this strategy will work quite often.

And then of course, there will be some teams (not too much, not too little) who can balance a goal consistently, and will get that multiplier. And I am sure human players will load up the near goal easily. So, I believe the average points will be around 200, or at least at the high 100's.

Here's my prediction. Given the quality of some robots I've seen in the past (good and bad). The average qualifying match score will be about 50. I think that some regionals it will be higher and at some it will be lower. Elimination match scores will be much higher because picked teams will be picked for specific attributes. I'm guessing at elimination scores around 200 or so.

Matt who realizes he's going to get proven wrong....
