"Girls in Gear" at Ramp Riot 2008

We just wanted to inform everyone about an exciting new program that is taking place at Ramp Riot 2008 this year.

It is called, “Girls in Gear” and is a program designed just for the Girl Scouts of America and approved by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. Girls will have a chance to learn about high tech careers, engineering concepts and will also have the chance to drive a competition robot in a supervised setting.
Participating girls will receive a specially designed event patch, as well as other gifts. Area GSA troops and individual Girl Scouts will be participating in this exciting new program.

We currently have 20 scouts with a limit of 100.

We are currently seeking :
1) Role model women, in scientific or technological careers, to speak to the Girl Scouts about careers in these fields.
2) Girls on current FRC or FTC teams to act as tour guides or demonstrators.3) Help to advertise this event to Girl Scouts through any appropriate GSA contact network that is available. (event flyer is attached)

If you can help, please reply to 341robotics@gmail.com or use the contact information on the attached flyer. The program will run on November 8th at Wissahickon HS between the hours of 9:30 and 11:30 AM.

Help us to inspire a generation of girls to be excited about Math, Science, and Technology.

Thank you for your support.

Alan Ostrow

Mr. Ostrow,

The Firebirds are willing to help you guys out in any way we can. I'll talk to the girls at our next meeting and get a few of them to be tourguides and help with the Girl Scouts.

We cant really help because, well, we are in Wisconsin. But I find it a great idea. My sister is a girl scout and has gone to one or two woman engineer things. How would a team proceed in doing something like this? I am really interested to hear what you guys are planning on doing. Good luck!

Brianna:

Thats Great! We always know we can count on the Firebirds! We definitely need girls that know all about FRC to explain the competition, demonstrate robots, and explain what's inside.
Just let us know.

Thanks!

Mr. O.

I think it is something that any team could organize pretty easily. Working closely with a GSA Leader is the key. We are going to have the scouts move through several stations such as a driving area, competition arena tour, guest speakers from industry, and several hands on activities. We made a specially designed event patch and worked closely with local Girl Scout leaders to make sure we didn't make any mistakes.
That was pretty much it. If its too much to do on your own, try working with a few local teams. it makes a nice group project and pooling your resources will make a stronger event.
If you have more questions just send me a PM.

Re: "Girls in Gear" at Ramp Riot 2008

Thanks, that helps a lot. One of our mentors is hoping to do some form of a demonstration with our robot. He wanted to make it some form of fundraiser but we are going to decide to do differently.

This is a really good idea. You are right, it shouldnt be too hard to work with other teams to do this. Thanks for the help, and let me know how your event turns out. Good luck.

Jacob

Ashley:
Thank you very much.
We are lining up guest speakers, so if you wanted to talk about FIRST and how it related to your current career. That would be amazing. We will have several guest speakers, but you would have all of the bases covered, GSA member, FIRST member, and working in a Technological field.

If you don't feel comfortable speaking, you could work with some of the girls in a smaller group setting.
The other thing you could do is let troops in your area know about the program.

Just send me an email at aostrow1@comcast.net and we'll figure it out.

Thanks very much for offering to help.

Al

Re: "Girls in Gear" at Ramp Riot 2008

We have a few great speakers so far, but are looking for a few more. We are seeking energetic role model women in high tech or science careers to speak to Girl Scout Groups during the morning at Ramp Riot.

We would love to have you there!
