SharingFirst Website

Tom Gray replied to my email concerning the SharingFirst site. It seems that someone with nothing else better to do "hacked" into the server as the root user and proceeded to screw it up. He's rebuilding from the ground up and says it will be a few more days.

i have a question about the files on sharingfirst. What are they drawn in, are they 3d solids, and did they all get deleted permanantly or will they be back up with the site?

Tom did not indicate that all was lost. I assume he dosen't feel comfortable in just restoring a backup and he did tell me that he had some software upgrades to install anyway. I know it will be back up ASAP, it means too much to Tom (and Woodie). As for my drawing files, I keep several copies in several places. The problem is that DaimlerChrysler (my employer) utilizes firewalls to keep the outside world off of our "Intranet". What I have drawn so far takes about 24 MB of disk space. I have more to draw over the next week or two and I had asked Tom for more space. What this all boils down to is a lack of a server and a system administrator willing to help. I have a cable modem on my end so uploading over a long period of time is not a problem.

Anybody got resources ?????

Screw up how? Did he say?

Just curious, I dont see any reason to hack into the SharingFIRST site, its not like theres anything secretive there.

Well, the general policy WHENEVER a site gets hacked (or cracked which is a better/more appropriate term but I digress) is to restore from a known good copy. The reason for this is that it's possible that the cracker could have installed trojaned programs on the computer. A trojaned program would allow the cracker to get back into the machine later on. As to why someone would crack SharingFIRST, mostly because it's there. Often times the cracker wants a base to commence other illegal activities (hosting warez, port scaning, jumping off point for other cracks, Distributed Denial of Service attacks, etc.). I'm just hoping that the SharingFIRST site admin installs the latest security patches in the future (that's the best way to prevent being cracked)....

Matt who realizes he knows way too much about this stuff

He didn't say and I didn't ask. I figured he had enough to worry about without me asking any more questions. If he sends me any more info, I will pass it along.

A complete back-up of data needs to be done to any active site. While this take time and space it is well worth the effort.

We back up this site often. When we have crashed we have only lost a few files. We have been lucky.

There are some people in this world that have no regard for all the hard work a site takes to maintain. I hope all is soon well with the sharing first site. It is an asset to the FIRST community of teams.
