Goals Breaking?
Posted by Mark Garver at 1/18/2001 4:15 PM EST
Student on team #68, Truck Town Terror, from Waterford Kettering/OSMTech Academy and General Motors Truck Group. I was wondering if there are other teams out there that have built goals already and are having trouble with them breaking? We have built two of them and tipped them in a controled manner and both of them broke. One fell off the bridge and broke and the other was on the playing field and we tipped it. Both goals fell on the flat portion of the upper octagon. However the breaking occured at the corners. Another question I have is whats if it breaks like this during a match and you are able to right it but balls won't stay in it? Dean said to design a robot that would with stand a goal falling on it because it would be quite common. In my opinion this would come under FIRST equipment failing! Anyone else have a different view or a rule that clarifiles this? Thanks |

The PVC tubing did not fall out of the PVC fitting : Where exactly did the goal break at? was it just the pvc falling off the fittings or was it actually breaking? we've built a goal but havent tested it falling down. |

Anyone else have a different view or a rule that clarifiles this? Thanks That's just the way of this competition. All teams should build their robots so that they will not destroy any part of the playing field. But as you said, these accidents can happen. In that case, that means the robots aren't build well enough to handle the tower well, or it also means bad luck. If you look at DQ4 under the game, it said "Deliberately damaging the playing field, controls, or balls is strictly illegal and will result in disqualification of your alliance" In DA1: "If a robot accidentally damages the playing field, barrier, balls, or another robot, the referees may disable it for the remainder of the match. If the referees feek that further damage is likely to occur, corrective actions will be required to allow the robot to continue competing" So the equipment failing is actually part of the challenge from FIRST to force you to handle the goals really carefully, but also build a robust robot so it can handle goals falling on it. |

seemed strong at kickoff

Posted by Mark Garver on 1/18/2001 4:15 PM EST: Didn't at least one of the goals fall over during the demonstration at the kickoff? They seemed like they should be able to withstand a fall from the bridge. Is it possible that you have constructed it incorrectly. I can't say anything about our goal, it is supposed to be finished tommorow. Have you contacted Ron Roiux (sp?) to see if you are doing anything wrong. If this seems to be a problem, FIRST will probably issue an update with a more robust goal structure. : I was wondering if there are other teams out there that have built goals already and are having trouble with them breaking?
