Online "Spy-sheets"?

Student on team #250, GE Dynamos - Capital District Robotics Team, from Shenendehowa High School and General Electric.



In the spirit of cooperation and the kindler gentler FIRST has anyone thought of compiling a
database of info on all the teams?
In past years our team has written up "spy sheets" (that name doesn't seem appropriate this
year) on as many teams as we could. This year that could be beneficial to everyone. If a couple
teams got together after the regionals and contributed we could have almost everyone profiled.
Ahh well, it is hard for me to get over "veil-of-secrecy" we used to use in the past. (old habits
die hard) I'm sure it will be like that with other teams too. But if we got enough people together
we could definitely pull it off.
Whatever, it's just an idea.

Team 27 doesn't like to call them spy sheets but scouting sheets. In Michigan there is something called GMCIA, where a lot of Michgan teams pull together info for nationals. If you need info on teams from Michigan team 27 would be happy to help you!

Funny you mention that. SOAP, the SigmaC@T Opponent Analysis Program did something similar, only it was designed for watching matches. We could have profiles in there too and have a standard of how to input them so teams could write thier own and upload them to the web and to our database for automatic scouting and saving people tons of strategy stress. I'll mention it at our meeting today.

I think it will be better if you ask people a little bit later when everyone's design and construction get to a more finalized stage. Right now, everyone are just chewing their brain away trying to finish their robot, and I believe later they are more willing to do such things.

setup a booth in florida.... assign some students in the booth to send out questionnaires to every team and ask them to return the sheet.

let the students input the data (actually, just use a computer to do this... let the questionairre be like those SATs...)....and in return to all the teams that contributed, give them all a copy of the data.

anyone wanna do this ?

I don't know about that. There are many potential problems involved with asking teams to tell you about their own robot, because they ARE biased towards their own bot's potential, and not on how it actually performs. One of the good things about the GMCIA last year was that all the info came from scouts actually sitting down and writing out reports while watching MATCHES. This way, you got real data on how these bots were actually performing, and not on how they were designed.

couldn't you do a mix of this?

like, start collecting data(through questionaires)....you can do this in the few days just before the competition...when people are setting up...then when the actual competition starts you can update it...(if it's not accurate)...

I agree with the point that teams are going to be biased about their robot...so that in the begining(before you have a chance to "scout" them)...you can have an idea of what they will do...

so that in the really early matches people will be able to see what they will be working with...

I would be happy to help with anything you want me to do. I think the best way to go about getting written data is to have each team do their own. When the team submits their own data we can give them access to the database. I think that would encourage enough teams to submit. If we begin at regionals it would take a big load off of the nationals in FL. I think everyone should start to post their ideas of what should be on the database, such as 3 or 4 up close, digital pictures.

As Robby mentioned below, team 108 has SOAP (http://63.239.116.179/ - they're having DNS problems), which last year had match results, scouting info, and videos of each match. This year, team 111 is joining with them to include scouting on PalmOS devices (right now we're using licensed software on the palm, so we'll see what we can do about sharing it with everyone). If you come to any of the SOAP-enhanced competitions, come look for the booth.

Seriously, I think this is a great idea, my only complaint, is that there's so many of them. There shouldn't be any more competition over this scouting program vs. that scouting program, the award for the scouitng program was given out last year, and there's no point to be competing over the best program.

As strange as this may seem, I think the head of one of the scouting programs should step up and create an organization for scouting outside of their team.

Teams would be recognized the same for contributing (even the team the head was from), but it also puts them all on the same level, instead of getting people upset because even though they contributed their team wasn't as recognized as the team that organized it.

FIRST is very good about giving space for booths, and I really think that a non-team affiliated organization would be the best way to go to assimilate all this wonderful information into a central location for all teams to converge and communicate efficiently.

Is this a good idea? Bad idea? Please don't hate me for going against the idea of team-affiliated organizations. It's just an idea of mine that I've been mulling over lately, and feel free to pick it apart.

Jess, I agree with you here, I think haveing more non team-afiliated things will be better. That's why I started firstrobotics.net. To have aplace on the internet where anyone could go to find resources (like this one), and other things that are planned for the future.....

But I think combining both the GMCIA and SOAP would be very cool. GMCIA will have all the stats, and pictures of robots, while SOAo could provide video for some other type of scouting system.
