====ROBOT TUG OF WAR====

Posted by Anton Abaya at 1/21/2001 11:19 PM EST

Coach on team #419, Rambots, from UMass Boston / BC High and NONE AT THE MOMENT! .

I've had this dream for a while now.

Are there any teams who might be willing out there willing to do this? Robot vs Robot!

It would be a nice sideline for FIRST to host as well just for fun.

Really, this robotic competition should have mini-games like tug of wars, robot sprints, carriage race (there was one last year), etc.

Any takers?

Hey,

I like the idea of these little mini-games like drag races, tug of war, etc. However I think that teams might be reluctant to do this type of thing during the offical season. I know I wouldn't want to blow my drive system out in a tug of war @ nationals. However I think that this is the type of thing that the various invitationals should cater to...we've always talked about it @ River Rage but never really done it. I did see it done @ Bash at the Beach 2000...with mixed reviews.

Food for thought,

-Justin

We've done things just like this at Mayhem In Miami for the past two years, and it is often the highlight of the competition. Last year, we had a "king of the Hill" match, which was basically a two minute free-for-all between 8 robots on the field for supremacy of the ramp (of course, we did this last, since it was a "no rules" match). It was soo much fun to watch. One team even changed their robot JUST for that match!

Hey Anton,

That was good old Team 97 last year with the Chariot races in FL. I'm sure we'd be happy to do something like that again after everything is over down there. We should get your team and Elizabeth's team and have a Team 97 alum race!

Frank

California Robotics Game

Last year around September 30th, around 20 of the california Teams gathered together for the Robotics Game. The main focus was still the actual competition itself, but aside of the competition we have these games:

Robot Dash
Robots will be timed for speed in a 100 foot dash - top two times will go head to head at the end of the day to decide the champion

Human Player
Each team may have up to two human players test their skill at shooting for the goals. Players will have 1 minute to shoot 15 balls - fourteen 1 point balls and one 2 point ball - the top two scores will go head to head at the end of the day to decide the champion

Fastest to Hang
Robots will be timed from the word go until "all hands are off controllers" - of course the time only counts IF the robot remains hanging for ten seconds

Speed Scoring
Time it takes robots to score 10 points into their goal and 1 in the opponents goal - field setup will be regulation. If teams drop/miss balls and need more, extra yellow balls will be available to the alliance station human player - but they will each carry a 5 second penalty

King of the Hill
Head to head double elimination tournament. Robots begin touching each other at the peak of the ramp. First robot whose wheels touch the floor is the loser

Driver Challenge
Obstacle course. Time it takes drivers to complete challenge course. There will be time penalties if certain obstacles are hit.

Teams may compete in up to three of the six additional robot challenges throughout the day. To compete in the robot "games" - all robots must compete "exactly" as they compete in the tournament (no modifying or dismantling robot just for a specific game).

Although we never finished all of the games due to lack of time, it was lots of fun seeing our robots competiting differently.
