Labview 8.5 and encoders

Hello everyone,
I'm a sophomore, and this is my first year as a programmer in FTC. Currently, I'm struggling with how to use the encoder function of labview with our robot. We got the encoders installed, and I've found the VIs for the encoders, but I'm not sure how to work them, and the Labview help section is most unhelpful. Does anyone know how to use them?
Thanks

There is a video and example encoder program on this page under using FTC Sensors.
