U bolts

Posted by Athena at 1/24/2001 6:59 PM EST

Student on team #481, DART, from De Anza High School.

Our team is using some U bolts on our robots to keep the motor where we want it. Some of our people asked if we could use them and no one was really sure. We can right?
thanx ^.^

Yup, they are fasteners, which are unlimited as long as you use them as fasteners, which you are doing, so it is legal.

Last year our team used U-Bolts to hold our drive (drill) motors in place. We put the motors in their (plastic) casings and filed notches for the U-Bolts. We had very little success with this as the motors had a tendency to rotate under the U-Bolt.

I've seen a lot of other teams using host clamps to fasten the motor on the robot, and it seems to be more successful because when you grip the motors really hard with host clamps, they tend to deform somewhat into the shape of the motor, thus reducing the chance of motors rotating in anyways or even slipping... But a lot of teams also prefer custom mounting on the motors, such as making their own motor mounts for the drill motors like team 45's (shown in the white paper section), or taking advantage of the three treaded holes on the Van Door/window motors, as well as the 4 holes on the globe motor's gear box.
