Plug-ins like character studio dont change your entire 3dsmax user interface, they simply add new things 3dsmax can do, such as modifiers. In the case of character studio, here's what it adds:
1. In the create panel, goto systems and select biped. You can create a biped out of boxes and then if you goto the motion panel, you can animate the biped using footstep animation or other stuff.
2. Create a mesh to use as the skin of your character, then create a biped (described above) and scale each of the body parts of the biped to fit within your mesh. Then select both the things and add a Physique modifier (new with character studio) Now you can animate your mesh simply by animating the biped!
For more information see the HUGE .pdf (700 page tutorial book) on the character studio reference CD
Also, I thought I would advertise the egroups for FIRST animators at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/firstanimators . We have over 170 members and any question you ask will be answered extremely quickly. We also share tutorials, max files, and images.
