Man I love FIRST!

I went out to dinner tonight at a local rib place with my wife and daughter. As we were preparing to leave, I see about 6 teenagers arrive and get seated at a nearby table; two of them are wearing Team 501 shirts. So as I wandered past their table, I looked one of them in the eye, smiled and said, "Team 501 ... what do YOU think the fish means?"

The whole table broke out in laughter. I said "Team 811, see you at the Granite State Regionals, Good Luck!" and left.

Re: Man I love FIRST!

We were out on our homecoming dinner with a group of 10 ppl, 5 of which are in robotics. My friend turns to me, and says "Dude, that guy at the table next to us looks familiar..."
I had been thinking the same thing, and after a few seconds it clicked - it was one of the Foley Freeze (910) mentors

As he was leaving, we "confronted" him - we robotics kids got a kick out of talking to him, while all the non-robotics kids facepalmed...

That is so true. At our school, we have a rivalry with North Gwinnett. It's just plain and simple. They're good, and we're better. But when it comes to Robotics, our Robotics team and North Gwinnett's team are really close. We always try to pair up and get together and we watch each other's backs at regionals. It's really amazing.

I know what you mean. Our team(340) is really close with the robotics team in Webster,Team SparX, 1126. We get together and play football and go bowling and stuff. Two years ago we went down to Buckeye to cheer with them. That's what FIRST is all about.

1501 and 1720 always seem to go out for dinner together after competitions...But all those kids together gets pretty hectic...Especially with a soft serve ice cream machine lol

That second one is one amazing thing to say haha. Wish I could have thought of that (or seen it) before our team fundraiser Would have been funny... but I'm still gonna remember that

Re: Man I love FIRST!

I started talking about robotics on my gaming community's forum, and changed my Steam icon to the FIRST logo. It's so weird how not even an hour after I did so, I got three messages saying how they mentor a team or they used to be on a team. So far, it seems half the community knows what FIRST is, at least.

I completely agree Justin. When transferring to a different college, I was given the opportunity to mentor with SparX instead of GRR becuase it was a shorter commute. That is what FIRST is all about. I love working with both teams!

Well first off thanks justin and matt!! Im so happy ive gotten the chance to meet both of you and the rest 340 i know. FIRST is an amazing program not only do you get to build robots and meet awesome people...from my personal experience you find yourself and become a way better person because of the values and lessons you learn from meetings, competitions and meeting people.

i can NOT wait for the '09 season to start!
