There are 4 teams in the block I mentor, and I'm really excited to see what two of them can do. They have very ambitious designs, and I believe they'll finish in time to be able to test before competition. And to think, all I had to do was keep them on task and pester them with questions that made them think

This a VRC Regional Tournament and "Yes", it is separate from the VRC Regional Stonewall MS will hold.
Both of these Manassas tournaments (NOVA and the SMS Roboticon) are "official" (i.e. they
aren't just-for-fun scrimmages or another sort of local event). Winners on and off the field at both tournaments will qualify for post-season competition in the VRC Championship of the Americas and the VRC World Championship.
The Jan 17th NOVA VRC Regional is open to any and every team.
The last time I discussed things with the SMS folks, they anticipated that the SMS tournament would initially be limited to local middle schools, and after those have had a chance to sign up, any remaining slots will be opened to whomever wants to attend.
A scrimmage aimed at middle school and rookie teams is planned for Benton MS, Feb 7th.
Other VRC Regionals near us are the College of Southern Md Regional, the NorthWestern MD Regional, and events in/around Baltimore.
