the future of FIRST....i think?

Posted by Anton Abaya at 2/2/2001 1:14 AM EST

Coach on team #419, Rambots, from UMass Boston / BC High and NONE AT THE MOMENT! .

is anyone amazed at our growth rate?

i fear however that someday, we will hit the 1000 mark...or even later on the 2000 mark. can florida REALLY host that many teams?

or will it come down to FIRST having to hold 2 national competitions.... ? or perhaps only allowing bots of winning regionals to ascend to nationals...

that would indeed stink... i dunno. how big is florida anyway....it's like north of canada right?

: or will it come down to FIRST having to hold 2 national competitions.... ? or perhaps only allowing bots of winning regionals to ascend to nationals...

I've mentioned this before (perhaps 2 years ago, but I can't remember), but I'll mention it again:

What I would do if FIRST outgrows the Nationals at EPCOT...

I would divide FIRST up into 2 or more "divisions" kind of like high school football. For this example, assume that there are two divisions. The big, well funeded, historically successfull teams would be in Division I while the less successful and rookie teams would be in Division II.

Each division would have it's own competitions (at EPCOT or wherever) and each division has its own National Champion.

The interaction between the two divisions would be like that between the PGA Tour and the Buy.com Tour (formerly the Nike Tour -- the feeder tour to the Big Dance). That is, the top X number of teams in Division II get to move up to Division I the next year. Likewise, the bottom X teams in Division I lose their tour cards, so to speak, and must play in Division II the next year.

It works much the same way in a lot of sports. The good ball players make it to The Show while the struggling players get sent to AAA to hone their skills a little before making another run at it.

People might say that the teams in Division II would feel bad about being in Division II, but I don't think this would be the case after people got used to the idea. I typically watch the Michigan High School Football state championships and the Class D schools celebrate their championship just as much as the Class A schools.

Anyway, it's an idea.

What about...

The NRC and the ARC? And then we could have a robot super bowl... we would get more publicity than that masquerade that was on tv a few days ago...

how about this: FIRST SURVIVOR!!
..You have been stranded on an island with members from 15 other first teams. You and your team need to build a robot out of the earth around you, and get yourself off of the island. One of you will be voted off every 3 days, and whoever is left- instead of getting voted off, gets left on the island to try to get themselves out (much like cast away). but the bonus is, is if that you get off the island by yourself, you get to go on abc's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire!"

I have to go to work...

So how much am I being paid to go on the show??? I love camping, but eating rats and larva are not my favorite activities. Also, are motors supplied to us, or do we have to make them out of the earth and trees and rocks around us, too?

IF we outgrow Epcot? We already have people. They put a cap on it this year meaning that we're out of space. What does this mean? I have no clue but I bet nationals move (I've been saying this since kickoff....). That's just my $.02.

Some where some time ago I heard they are building some kind of structure over the water place, you know, the water next to where all the crates were?

Hopefully that will be enough for the growth of this year... and hope the pit area will be just as big and nice.

Its not geometry, Its geography.... And Florida is North of Canada. If you head north from Texas and keep going ia a straight line 38000 miles you will run into
the Florida Keys..... There is a short cut but I left my dividers and slide rule at work.
