not only would running on tether be required anywhere except on the field, but they would be able to detect such activity and pinpoint its location within feet.

Having had a job that involved tracking down rouge APs--the only way that I could see this working is by cross-referencing team numbers(which can be found by monitoring the signal) and team pit locations. Otherwise, it's too much work to pin down the physical location(but if they have your team number they don't really need to anyway)
