: I recall reading a post some time back about the drill motors having a limited life- that after a certain number of hours they needed to be changed out.

: That post has scrolled off the board, and I would like to know from others' experience how long the drill motors tend to last, and how often they should be changed out. Also, when they fail, has anyone done a post-mortem to see how - i.e. gearbox failure, armature burned out, bearing failure, et cetera.

Properly designed, there should be no problem. We have robots going back over six years that still have their original motors.

In our first and second years, we had problems with gearing and side loads and, yeah, we toasted a few. If your motor gets hot, look at the problem closely. The most likely problem is too much friction or side loading in your system.

Bottom line: We replace motors when they fail.
