Rover Wheel Bearings

Is there any way to put 1/2" bearings in the rover wheels? Unfortunately, I assumed that yesterday, but came to the lab this morning to put the wheels on our practice drive-train to no avail. Can we buy bearings that will fit? The bearings they came with seem to be undersized 1-1/8".

Also, I realize that an un-driven 3/8" axle would be strong enough, and I don't want this to turn into a 25/35 chain discussion about strength. We have other reasons why we are using a 1/2" axle.
