Question Missing Parts in 2009 KOP

our team is missing two parts out of our KOP. We were wondering if any outer teams are missing these parts because another team is also missing the same parts.

these parts are the:
1) sensor board - Gyroscope
2) Motor, RS-545

Im sorry that i couldnt provide the PN for these items, but the PN was not includded in the KOP check list...

thanxx for the replies

It's not an every-KoP thing, our team had both of those.

These parts were in separate bags at our kit off.

Re: Missing Parts in 2009 KOP

One of the things I found missing from every kit were the quick-connect pneumatic fittings. It seems odd that FIRST would ignore a CRITICAL part of every pneumatic system, even though they gave us tubing for it.

Pneumatics in a nutshell: Put together an elaborate series of pipes, canisters, cylinders, valves and hoses; then fill that system with highly pressurized air, and hope that it doesn't blow up in your face.

These items were shipped separately to local kickoff sites. I've been told that the DC local kickoff didn't receive them in time to hand out on Saturday.

So far, my team has the Fedex labels, the rest of the KoP hasn't arrived yet.

Re: Missing Parts in 2009 KOP

Greetings Teams:

Section 10.1.1 of the Competition Manual reviews the proper procedure for submitting a “Replacement Parts request.” The text below restates the procedure for teams.

Replacement Parts Request Procedure
After receiving and checking all items in your Kit of Parts (KOP), should you determine you are missing a part(s), or need a replacement part(s) you must use the FIRST "Replacement Parts Request" system to order replacements.

Parts requests will be handled through this online system only.

The Replacement Parts Request system will be accessible via the Team Information Management System (TIMS) at noon (Eastern Time) on Saturday, January 3.

To begin the process of submitting a Replacement Parts Request, team Main or Alternate contacts will:

* Log into TIMS
* On the right side of the Team Summary page, under the "What’s New" header, click on the link to "Submit a Replacement Parts Request HERE"
* Follow TIMS instructions to complete a Replacement Parts Request

VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!

This is a "one time only" opportunity to submit a Replacement Parts Request. Please make sure your request is both accurate and complete prior to pressing the "Confirm Request" button.

Once the request is submitted and confirmed there can be no changes to it.

Replacement Parts Requests will be processed and shipped to teams in a timely manner. Please make sure your Shipping Contact information is accurate and complete in TIMS as this is to whom the parts will be shipped.

Please note the system will not allow teams to request a quantity of parts higher than the number originally sent with the KOP. This system is also not to be used to order additional or purchased parts.

Deadline Date and Time
All requests must be placed by 11:59 pm (Eastern Time) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009.

Go Teams!

That answer does not work with the problem of the missing Gyroscope !! TIMS does not list the Gyroscope on the parts list!! A double wammy that needs to rectified by FIRST

Roger that.

I just read the other thread. I would give it a day or so to let FIRST figure out how to address since it seems this issue is bigger than just your team.

I believe they are Kevlar gloves. In other words i believe you won't get cut while wearing them. I'd say something mean, but it would probably be un-GP and therefore i will bite my tongue.

We handed out the kits at Newark, NJ, and that was the case there as well - the motors, gyro and accelerometers were handed to each team. We didn't get the pressure relief valves.

Aren't they inside the "brass bag" ?

Not sure about Kevlar, but in any case it is proper safety practice to wear gloves when handling the robot, or any parts that can have sharp edges, to protect your hands. So some company decided that perhaps they could sell some more gloves by providing a sample in the FIRST KoP...

As for biting your tongue, perhaps you need a Kevlar tongue protector?

I'm not really a big fan of the whole "you need to wear gloves!" thing for two reasons. The first reason is that if robots were designed to have safe lifting points without any sharp corners, then gloves are useless.

The second reason why I dislike the whole gloves movement is because I've seen too many over-sealous "safety" people telling groups to wear gloves when using tools. OSHA (and industry) guidelines will typically tell you that any time you are working with any kind of tools with fast cutting objects (such as saws, drill bits, end mills, lathes, etc), it is actually more dangerous to wear gloves.

The reason for this is that when a saw blade encounters flesh, it typically just cuts right through. Damage can be bad, but very localized. But when a saw blade or drill bit encounters cloth, it begins to shread the cloth and the fibers get caught in the tool. This sucks your hand further into the machine, ultimately doing much more severe damage if an accident were to occur.

The only time it's a good idea to wear gloves is when you aren't working with any kind of tool, such as materials handling or something.
