Engineer on team #67, HOT Team, from Huron Valley Schools and GM Milford Proving Ground.

You may have already seen this but I'll put this out anyway. If you have any questoins, I am more than willing to answer them.

The HOT Team #67 and the General Motors Proving Ground invite you to participate in our fund-raiser for FIRST robotics teams. One-third of the bid amount will go to the FIRST team designated by the bidder. Auction ends February 10th. Bidding closes on the first item at 7:40 pm and on the last item at 8:59 pm.

Up for auction is a very unique and limited automotive experience hosted by the General Motors Milford Proving Ground.

At the heart of the experience is a 2 hour, in the vehicle, hands-on Advanced Driver Training at the General Motors Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. This training was developed specifically for our Test Drivers and is not available to the public (with the exception of this charitable event). The training
experience includes: evasive maneuvering, skid recovery, off-road recovery, and controlled braking. The experience is rounded out with a signed training
certificate, a commemorative photograph, and an official Proving Ground hat.

The winner of the bid will designate a FIRST team to receive a share of the bid
price, and the person who will participate in the GM Proving Ground Experience.

Conditions:
1) The participant must have a valid drivers license.
2) The participant must disclose their employer and connections with competitive companies.
3) Your training will occur on a Saturday in late spring or early summer 2001 with the exact date being coordinated with the participants.
4) The in-vehicle high speed training is not included (but you can ask our expert drivers to describe the hazards).
5) The training will occur in a standard training vehicle.
6) Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the facility.
7) In the event of insurmountable scheduling difficulties, this opportunity expires September 30, 2001 without the return of the charitable contributions.

I have completed this training and though I would share some more details.

The vehicle I used was a new Grand Prix GTP. This car has a supercharged 3.8 liter engine that makes 240 hp. All of the manuvers were performed at the VDTA (Vehicle Dynamics Test Area) here at the Milford Proving Grounds. The VDTA is about 80 acres of flat asphalt (roughly 2000 ft wide and 2000 ft long. There is a large "slick" pad at one end which simulates icy road conditioins. This "slick" pad is where you learn how to recover from a skid. These skids are induced by locking up the rear wheels at around 60 mph. It is not uncommon for people to fail to recover from the skid and end up carreening off of the "slick" pad onto dry pavement, sideways, backward, etc. As you might expect the tires on these vehicles only last a couple hundred miles.

One of the other demonstrations is doing a panic brake with one side of the vehicle on dry pavement and the other on the slick pad. The result is a very fast spin. I got 5 & 1/2 total turns before stopping. I'm told you can get 7.

Well I don't want to spoil too much of the fun. Not only is the experience educational but it is very fun and very safe. You are at all times accompanied by a professional driver.

Happy bidding!
