Many, Many, Many, Questions!

Posted by Eric Kubo at 2/6/2001 1:41 AM EST

Student on team #668, Titans, from Pioneer High School and NASA Ames.

We are a rookie team and have a few questions
(please post a response if you can answer ANY of
our questions):

1. Does FIRST pay for drayage (storage) during the
time between the robot is sent in and the
competition? How does this work?

2. How many actuators can we have on the robot?
6? How many can we order, and are they for free?

3. What kinds of springs can we use? How many
can we use?

4. Can we use eye screws, and, if so, how many?

5. Can we only use the hinges that are available us
through the Small Parts Catalog (and the piano
hinge that we already have), or can we get them
somewhere else? If so, what is the limit on them?

: 1. Does FIRST pay for drayage (storage) during the
: time between the robot is sent in and the
: competition? How does this work?

Yes FIRST pays for storage. You just need to make sure you ship the robot to the right place and the crate does not exceed the size and weight requirments. The details should be in your manual.

: 2. How many actuators can we have on the robot?
: 6? How many can we order, and are they for free?

You are allowed to use 6 pneumatic cylinders on your robot. They must come from the six that you are allowed to order from the FPDA and the two that came in the kit. The cylinders from the FPDA are free, see the pneumatics manual for details. Also, check team updates 3 and 5 for clarifications on the number of cylinders allowed.

: 3. What kinds of springs can we use? How many
: can we use?

You are only allowed to use the springs from the kit and additionally, springs that are purchased from SPI. You may also make your own springs from legal materials, but the rate at which energy is stored must not exceed the rate at which energy is released.

: 4. Can we use eye screws, and, if so, how many?

Assuming they are used as fasteners you can use an unlimited amount. If they are used for some other purpose, then they must be purchased from SPI or made from legal materials.

: 5. Can we only use the hinges that are available us
: through the Small Parts Catalog (and the piano
: hinge that we already have), or can we get them
: somewhere else? If so, what is the limit on them?

You are correct that you can only get hinges from SPI, except for the one in the kit. You may also manufacture them as long as you use legal kit parts.
