Powerhouse teams vs. Powerhouse Alliances...
Posted by Brian at 2/11/2001 4:35 PM EST
Student on team #56, Robbe Xtreme, from Bound Brook High School and Ethicon Inc.. Hey, I was just thinking as to whether everyone is building a powerhouse or do it all robot or a robot that will attribute other robots to make a powerhouse alliance. Our team has choosen to make a robot that will compliment other robots to make a "ultimate" alliance... What about your teams... Post reply's... Brian |

Posted by Brian on 2/11/2001 4:35 PM EST: Not a comment on my team, but my own personal opinion. As I said earlier, if you take a team of robots that are excellent all-around-ers and a team of robots that each excel at a specific & exclusive task, the second team will win hands down. My prediction: the national champion alliance will get their winning score with 4 robots each performing a primary task that the other 3 are incapable of doing (unless the primary task is moving a goal or driving to the endzone which all teams will be able to do). Just my personal thoughts... Chris #368 |

Seeding favors PT's

Posted by Brian on 2/11/2001 4:35 PM EST: Seeding gives a definite advantage to teams that require very little of their partners. While this does not require a powerhouse team, per se, it does require that a team that wants to gain one of those high seeds has to design their robot so that it can get large scores with partners that can do little more than drive over the bridge (and perhaps at least one that can pull or push a goal?). As to specializing, this is going to be a big part of the Elimination Rounds. But... you have to get to the elimination rounds first. Remember, only 4 teams out of over 80 per group get automatic invitations to the elimination rounds. Either you plan on being lucky (i.e. you plan on getting a lot of good partners) or you plan on getting high scores without asking much from your partners. Which is the better strategy? As I have often said lately, Time will tell. Joe J. |
