We have always soldered these connections. Your problem may be related to "cold" solder joints. This means that you are not applying enough heat to the parts being soldered to allow the solder to "flow". I use a soldering iron that rates just below a blow torch and I've never had any problems. I also support the wires near the end of the motor with a cable clamp (Small Parts pg. 351).
