When you static the IP, don't set a gateway. I believe it's putting it into the routing table on the computer and thus, yeah, trying to use the robot network for internet.
Although there's that fancy router thing, it's not really being used as a router, more of as a switch with all the clients with static IPs. You're not using the WAN port of the router, just the other ports, which are switched ports. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch in case you care.
