Can't figure out the Axis camera setup...

Having searched the forums, and having found similar, but not identical problems, I will ask yet another camera question.

I have the camera connected to my wireless laptop, via the crossover cable. The firewalls are off.

With both IPs set automatically; the Setup Axis Camera tool returns:
"Unable to connect to camera. Ensure the camera is connected to the PC and IP settings are correct." Of course since I didn't set the IP address, brousing to 192.168.0.90 returns, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." At this point though, the camera shows up in My Network Places, and I can log on to it to receive video, and change time settings, etc...

So next, I tried to follow the instructions in 5.5. With the IPs set to 192.168.0.6 on the wireless network connection, and 192.168.0.90 on the local area connection; the Setup Axis Camera tool returns, "ANUnable to complete operation because of unexpected error %d:%s63 TCP Open Connection in Axis Issue HTTP Request with Authentication.vi->Axis Issue Get.vi->Axis Create FRC User.vi->Dialog.vi." Brousing to 192.168.0.90 returns, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage."

What do I need to do to set it up correctly? I suspect I'm not setting the computer IP address correctly, but don't know what to do differently.

Hello,

You said you have set the local area connection IP to 192.168.0.90. Do you mean the laptop's actual ethernet adapter has been set to this, or do you mean to say you have had the camera configured to this IP? That's the default IP of the camera, so setting your computer to the same IP causes a conflict, and neither will be able to communicate with the other. If you wish to work on the camera, the best solution will be to disable wireless and set the ethernet adapter to the IP of 192.168.0.90. They will need to be on the same subnet (that is, if subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0 in network settings, you have all the first 3 octets in the IP set the same for camera/computer ethernet adapter). Another choice is to hook the camera into your _home_ router, but this will only work if your router assigns IPs in the 192.168.0.* area as well, and the .90 address is not already in use.

Also, when connected to your laptop, a crossover cable isn't complete necessary, although it won't hurt anything - the ports on modern laptops are smart "auto-sensing" and can adapt.

I still don't understand all this IP address stuff, but somehow, your response made sense to me. So I changed the settings on the LAN conncetion to 192.168.0.6, and now I can browse to the camera (192.168.0.90).

The way I had been understanding the instructions from the web site referenced in the manual; I thought I was setting the IP of the laptop when I changed the settings on the wireless connection, which led me to think I was changing the camera IP when I changed the LAN settings. I guess I was wrong in both cases.

So, I guess I now need to change the wireless connection settings to 192.28.29.6, to match our team network - Right?

I believe that your laptop should be using a static IP address of 10.28.29.6 (unless you're doing something non-standard).

Oh, yeah - That's right. I've changed the numbers so many times over the last few days, I got confused on that point. That's what I change the wireless connection settings to - Right?

In order to view the camera by typing its address into a browser your computer will have to be on the same subnet (default gateway/default router) as the camera. IP addressing can be thought of like the postal system. Think of your network as an office building and the IP of the devices as your personal mailbox in the office building. In order for anything to actually get to you, the package will have to be addressed to the building (default gateway) and then forwarded to your exact mailbox in the building (IP of the device).

To be able to properly program your robot, debug, etc., yes. Make sure you don't forget to change it back after you're done, or you'll have trouble using internet when you get back to your normal wireless network (Different subnets on each network!).

I believe someone posted some batch files not too long ago on these forums - you may want to search for them. They will automatically switch between your team's static IP and your normal automatic IP settings when you run them. Just check the instructions to make sure it's setting your team number correctly in the IP address.
