My Own Question of the Week

Posted by Chris Hibner at 02/23/2001 8:17 AM EST

Coach on team #308, Walled Lake Monster, from Walled Lake Schools and TRW Automotive Electronics.

This is a question I've been wanting to ask teams:

How many person-hours does your team spend on only the robot (do not include animation, PR, or other team functions)? Time spent on the robot includes brainstorming, design, build, debug, etc.

We've estimated that over our 5 years doing this, we average 1000 person-hours (for engineers) to do the robot. This year was no exception as it came in at almost exactly 1000 hours. For those who aren't familiar, 1000 person-hours is 6 working months for one person working 40 hours per week. This is pretty rough considering we only have 6 engineers working on the robot. I'm just wondering is this typical or not.

I cannot account for the other members of my team. But I did keep a fairly accurate account this year of my own hours from kickoff to shipping:

224 hours in January
214 hours in February (66 just in the last 4 days, and only 1 hour on Feb,22 to make sure it was shipped correctly)

Keep in mind that I still averaged 10 hours a day in my real job during that time, when I did work! I also took 10 days of vacation and typiccally worked 16 or more hours on those days.

My wife was awesome; she was very busy at work herself - my son is on the team, so that helped.

Sorry if I gave you more than you asked for.

Raul

I kept fairly accurate time records as well. I spent approx. 450 hours working on my team's robot. 70 of those hours were from Friday afternoon through Tuesday morning.
