Re: carmen ball handling
Very nice Ledge! Say, could I ask you a question? We are having trouble picking a good way to make a quarter pipe curve. We are thinking aluminum with bracing to make it that shape. Should we maybe look into plastic? If so what kind? Thanks.

Re: carmen ball handling
Should this be in robot showcase?
Sorry, that sounded bad, very good mechanism, and good idea sharing your progress. Last edited by Andy L : 28-01-2009 at 22:38. |

Re: carmen ball handling
EXCELLENT! We have a very similar design that collects from a hopper and the floor. Our original idea for what you call "the harvester" and what we call "the chicken pluckers" consists of pneumatic tubing. Is that what is being used here?

Re: carmen ball handling
You might try lexan. Find a can or pipe that is the shape you want and then heat the lexan with a heat gun to melt it into place around the pipe. You might also look at PVC or abs Pipe that is the diam you want and just cut it. Good luck

For our shooter quarter pipe, we are planning to cut radiused side walls in plywood, and bend 14" wide steel flashing around it. The flashing will have 1.5" tabs notched into the sides and bent at 90" angles to be screwed to the outside of the plywood. The flashing will have each 2" segment bent 5-10degrees with a cheap sheet metal hand brake to provide some stiffness across the gap. Haven't done it yet, but thats the plan. Probably need "lightning" holes in the sides, also for visibility of balls getting stuck. Also traction mat glued to the flashing and the shooting wheel. |

Re: carmen ball handling
How you make the quarter pipe curve might depend on what else the balls are doing that will ride on it. We are using some thin 3/4" poly tubing as bottom and side rails, to guide the balls up from the harvester to the shooter, with a kind of flapper wheel thing in the middle to drive them. If the balls will be compressed against the quarter pipe, then it needs to be pretty substantial, and the idea of using several plywood supports sounds good.
Oh yeah...nice job Falcons! Looks like you're getting the pieces of the puzzle all put together |

Make sure those spikes don't leave the bumper perimeter.

Re: carmen ball handling
wow very nice, how did you connect the polycord? Is that urethane belting that you are using? hmm, we were thinking about doing a lift similiar but oriented a little differently using 1/8" urethane orange belting...do you think 1/8" urethane belting is good enough to grip the ball? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the FIRST community

Re: carmen ball handling
Looks like a solid design coming together 842. Now we just have to wait and see how orbit balls will be flying out of top of this year's robot...
Have you tried driving up to balls and picking them up yet? |
