The encoder disk is supposed to spin with the shaft. That means it is not supposed to spin separately from the shaft. A loose encoder disk won't work properly. If your disk is not tightly bound to the shaft, you can remove it and carefully squeeze the plastic together to make it fit better.
If the disk was pressed too far onto the shaft and the grid pattern on its inner face has gotten scratched, it's probably permanently ruined. However, another likely cause of the symptom you're describing is that one of the signal lines isn't connected. Has the A or B wire come loose from the Digital Sidecar pin? |
