FIRST Training Courses

Posted by Ken Stafford at 02/26/2001 4:00 PM EST

Engineer on team #190, Gompei and the HERD, from WPI/Mass Acad of Math and Science and WPI.

We at WPI have been itching to conduct an in-residence summer short course (beginning in 2002) on FIRST technology. It would likely be a two-week course designed for high school students new to a FIRST team. I know there are a lot of other unofficial training programs out there and would be interested in hearing from anyone who has any information on them. Ours would attempt to cover the basics of power transmission, pneumatics, programming, and CAD and would include a significant hands-on power tool experience. The curriculum would include building and operating a robot built from previous FIRST kit parts. I'd appreciate any comments.

Hey Colonel!

Just wanted to say hi. Sounds like a great idea, and since I'm in the area during summers, I'd like to help.

I will most definitely send the entire high school group over if this were to occur. They could learn a lot from it and perhaps even allow me to get on with the other beautiful things in life. (like fishing....i have never caught a fish in my life)

You could probably count me in on that. Tho it would depend on when it would be. And what lodging would be provided, since I live in Michigan. And a 2 week hotel stay could get mighty expensive.

That said for people new to FIRST, seeing as this is my third season, I don't think I'd qualify.
It'd still be fun. But I think it might be hard to get commitments for a summer camp for a team that doesnt really begin work until winter.

As i understand it, it would be a two week stay in a residence hall with Resident Assistants and on-campus meal plan.
