Programming NXT MINDSTORMS to work with Tetrix motors

I am in the FTC competition this year. In order to build our robot, we need to use Tetrix Servo and DC motors. But whenever I connect the motors according to the instructions, and then try programming the motors through the NXT, it doesn't work. How do I get them to work if all the motors are specially connected to one controller, and it is all connected to one port, and that's the only way I can?
