The Robonators 09

Rookie team 3044. So far so good! We have our drive system all set and are working hard to get the retrieval system all set. We also are creating our hopper and shooting mechanism right now.

Re: The Robonators 09

from the looks of it so far so good... though one suggestion.
from the picture it looks like you are going to be using wood on the frame of the robot... (from the one attached in front of the wheels). If you are planning to use a wooden frame I'd suggest switching to a more durable material like metal. This year is going to be a high contact, hard collision game and with the weight of the robots combined with the speed they will be hitting each other there will be allot of force and I'm not certain if it will be able to hold up to the repetitive impacts. We tried using wood our first year and we got taken apart.

good luck to you!

Re: The Robonators 09

First off, if properly used, wood can be a perfectly acceptable material to use for a robot chassis. 1726 and 1771 both choose to go that route this year and have posted pictures of their robots. I doubt either of these robots will fall apart.

Second, there chassis appears to be made of metal. The wood looks a lot like the start of a set of bumpers to me.

Re: The Robonators 09

If you look closely at the picture, the frame is metal. The bumpers (currently being built I believe) are made of wood.

Looks good 3044! Hopefully you can wrap it all up soon!

Best of wishes!

Re: The Robonators 09

I will gladly put our wooden chassis up against any metal chassis this year, and with the exception of possibly a couple teams, I guarantee our chassis will be stiffer and probably lighter. Wood when used properly, and when quality wood is used is incredibly strong and far lighter than aluminum (~1/7 density of aluminum). Our chassis was built with tongue and groove construction and all joints were glued using high quality boat building epoxy. We also used a highly specialized okoume plywood. Needless to say wood can work and in my opinion is the ultimate material for a drivetrain.

Dang, that is an old looking computer...

But on a (significantly) more related note: It's looking good

I think I see a roller there on the bottom, so I assume you're picking off the ground

are you gonna be player fed at all?

Good luck on the shooter!

Nice progress on the robot! Good to see you're working on the bumpers already as they are pretty important to the overall robot chassis design this year.

We are planning on being player-fed as well.

And on another note, the wood there isn't part of our actual frame. As some people have pointed out, the frame is metal.

Re: The Robonators 09

yea, we're adding an open hopper on top, that way we can pick up and carry multiple orbit balls as well have a player toss them into the top of the hopper
