I have no idea of the history of it. It is absolutely breathtaking, though.

The story/background behind the clock would be a wonderful piece of history for the past, present, and future FIRST community to be able to access and learn about.

The Woodie Flowers Award trophy, as well.

Edit: it would be cool to give provide/give the history to the recipient(s) to go with their trophy - so that they could share the information with folks throughout the year.

It would good to have in the FIRST website and if given as a certificate to the winning team or WFA, they could showcase it with the trophy while they have it in their possession. It could then become something they could keep after the trophy has been passed on. ( I had assumed this happened already.)

Also, the winner of the year could post the history with a photo of their team and the trophy in their website. I can see many possibilities make themselves available given the correct history and background.

The CA clock was indeed handcrafted by Dean for this very purpose. To the best of my knowledge, this is actually the second one he crafted as the original was damaged in shipping once (I believe). Since then the clock has traveled in it's own huge, padded, lockable case (somewhat similar to the Stanley Cup).

Little funny story from when I was with 103. Our school and display case had just been renovated and when we went to plug in the clock it didn't work. To add to the drama it had slipped a little when we carried it earlier and it "fell" to a hard stop - maybe 6-8 inches. The "bump" yielded no visible marks, but when we tried plugging it into the new display case - no dice. Uh, a little panic ensued until someone figured out that construction workers don't necessarily turn breakers back on after a job is done - whew!.

Working as an awards assistant in Atlanta in 2008 gave me an inside look into some of the awards most people don't get to see up close.
Very cool stuff! (And yes, the larger awards do come in their own metal exterior with a foam padded interior shipping crate as shown with the WFA below)

Is that our EI award with the rest of the trophies?

One suggestion to the awards assistants at all regionals and CMP.
Can they keep the boxes and give them to the winning teams?
It is always such a hassle and stressful trying not to scratch or damage them after getting them at competitions.
We keep all of the boxes of duplicates that we have ordered in the past (to give to mentors and donors) for transporting purposes.

I think we had discussed that among our hours of preparation as a passing conversation. I'm not sure if that conversation was flowed up "through the chain of command" so to speak, but I know (in Atlanta at least) we unpacked all the boxes, & then they were all thrown out by Thursday afternoon - we did all the prep work for the awards in one of the empty locker rooms & all those (cardboard) boxes got in our own way after a while.)

To improve the team's ability to transport as you mentioned & also to reduce some waste (for the time being - at least on site of an event) that would be a good idea to give the teams the boxes, but also one more thing to have volunteers assigned to take care of at an event.

I'm sure this can be brought up in the FIRST Forums as an official suggestion, or to your event coordinator for regional events to look at a possibility of implementing in the future.

The FIRST Forms have an Awards section to post questions or comments on, so I would say go for it & propose the idea & if you want, & also include some of the "inside info" I have shared here with your suggestion if you would like to.

As a HOF team, did you folks get another trophy to keep as the CMP award winner? I thought I saw a multi-layer one of our current types in the past somewhere......

I remember a VHS uploaded to google video outlining the 1990s history of FIRST including the clock... I can't seem to find it but if anyone else knows of it please share!

There was a second trophy presented to 842 last year. It was similar to FRC Champion/Chairman's trophies, but much larger in size. Anyone who'd seen an FRC trophy would recognize it immediately as a trophy from FIRST, but nobody would mistake it for anything lesser.

As Billfred stated, there have been team kept trophies with the Championship CA in the past. Here's a photo from 2003 that shows them:

Just like other awards, there have been two given two the team - one, presumably, for a primary sponsor and one for the team to display as it sees fit.
