"It Takes a Fire to Finish a Robot" -Team 1468

Well, tonight one of the strangest things that has ever happened to me during FIRST occurred . .

The school caught fire, and we were forced to evacuate . . one day before ship.

We moved all the equipment to a students house to resume putting the finishing touches on the robot.

Apparently approx. 500 gallons of oil spilled in the basement of the school due to a ruptured oil burner. Hazmat was on the scene when we returned to retrieve a few vehicles. There was extensive damage (though none to any of the main school building), and the school will most likely be closed for the rest of the week, if not longer.

I'm just grateful that this happened today and not sometime last week. Although I'd much rather it have happened tomorrow night . . AFTER the robot had shipped.

Edit: The robot was completed and tested as of 3 AM, being run in the basement of a local church. What started as a 2 day redesign of our shooter and harverster mechanisms turned into quite a production.

I'd imagine the fire department got quite a kick out of you guys. "Why are you still at school this late at night?!"

Unfortunately we were gone by the time the local news van arrived. They merely referred to us as "some students inside the building working on a robotics project for a future competition." We were in a hurry to get that thing finished!

Re: "It Takes a Fire to Finish a Robot" -Team 1468

Amazing . It’s fortunate that there was only damage to the school and no people injured.

Really makes complaints about lack of time, design problems or other build headaches seem minor. Great response to the tragic situation; robotics teams seem to just carry on one way or another. I love that!

Good luck getting your robot packed & shipped today. Hope your school can get cleaned & repaired quickly.

We are tremendously grateful that everyone is ok and that your team was able to get everything out safely.

Also, I wonder if FIRST or NI would have considered it a part of a Beta test of the cRIO...trial by fire...

Cool Re: "It Takes a Fire to Finish a Robot" -Team 1468

Thanks for posting that Matt. I only heard about bits and pieces being way up here in rochester. Happy to finally have the whole story. You should seriously send that to FIRST somehow and tell them about it. It really is an incredible story and you guys handled things really well. I think some of the team finally realized the real meaning of FIRST that night and why they were doing what they were doing. Thanks for sticking by the team!

That is awesome, I hope you guys gave the robot a fire themed name.

I heard about this fire from my brother, who said it occured when school was out for winter break or something....but luckly for all the happy kids the school was deemed safe for classes when they came back from break...ooo all those lucky students.
