Scouting Database Formats

A general notice to all the scouting database people out there (spread the word, if you can), I have a few questions for you.

What format is your database stored in? Flat-file? Access? FileMaker? SQL-compatible?

How is interoperability between different scouting databases?

What is/are the front-end(s) for your database? (web page, PalmOS application, Windows application)

Thanks!

Adrian,

Thanks for the interest. Hope these tidbits help you (and everyone else reading). Spread the word also to meet at EPCOT on Thursday near the SOAP area....wherever that will be....

Interoperability is really tough if you didn't plan ahead for it. And late changes (like RaulO's :-) always creep in no matter how much you plan.
"WASH with SOAP" started in January. We also co-developed much documentation, though you can never have too much??

SOAP (108) is based on FileMaker Pro...FM Pro is about the easiest db I've found to teach/mentor StUDentS with....We may move to something else in the future, though.....

WASH (111) is based on HandDBase (PalmOS) and VB and Access...That will likely change next year...Talk with Mike.Soukup@motorola.com for details....

TiGRR (340) is based on FileMaker Pro...
mike.spryn@nortelnetworks.com

To my knowledge GMCIA (65, 66, 67) is based on ThinkDB? (for PalmOS) and VB and Access and Excel....They are exporting data via .csv to SOAP as well. try www.huskiebrigade.com for details...
or ask around for Nate Smith (66) or Ken Patten (65)

"WASH with SOAP" trade data via .csv files (hadn't had time to deal with SQl/ODBC/JDBC this year....) next year for sure!!!

GMCIA has given SOAP its WMI Regional .csv data and we plan to support their data in our Kiosks by EPCOT....

SOAP is looking for at least a 3rd Scouting System to Partner with (WASH, GMCIA on board so far) ......let's talk at EPCOT....

There are the other DB's out there, but I don't know what they use...likely Excel/Access/???

Later,
KA - 108/SigmaC@T/SOAP

Could anyone experienced in cross-platform programming (Windows, Mac, PalmOS, Unix-derivative) contact me for an exciting project for the 2002 season?

Also, any database folks that are interested, shoot off an email.

Last, but not least, any budding VoiceXML developers should definately try to get in touch. Real interesting application for the FIRST competition.

Catch you guys at Nationals!

Well, I'm not really a database person, and definitely not a VoiceXML developer -- but you have piqued my interest. What is this "real[ly] interesting application" you have in mind?

I fall into the same category as the previos poster. I haven't worked too much with databases, but I love programming, and always enjoy challenges. Please, count me in.

SOAP is now investing time into making our DB available via ODBC. Look for bigger and better things from SOAP starting with Chicago.........

Adrian- KIT. The term "Killer App" doesn't begin to describe what we can accomplish if we all work together....

I'll do Mac, time permitting. Try to get me the needed info by summer, so I have time to work.

Do you like my db? http://www.aomega.doogan.cjb.net/

When you use it online, everything is HTML except for a little JavaScript. I generate the HTML using Hypercard. The HyperCard stack (program) I made automates a lot of stuff, but the actual database is stored in FileMaker Pro. The version is antiquated, though: 2.1 vs. 5.0 most recent I think.

I am collecting data from other DBs, but that's all totally by hand. :-(
