Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

My team (2604 rookies last year) were invited, but we barely scraped up the cash for nations let alone IFI, thats funny. I want to go this year at least as a spectator, I'll see i can organize my team to go.

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

My team has been trying to be excepted for the past three years. Even though our track record in michigan has been pretty good, we always seem to be on the waiting list. So what all is taken into account for entry? Is it because we haven't gone to Atlanta except our rookie year, the only year we have been excepted?

Very funny Chris. I think this is about the earliest I have seen the "what are we going to do different at IRI" discussion...

Does that mean there will be a serpentine draft this year at IRI? Blasphemy!

I'm not on the IRI selection committee, but I've seen the process. Given that there are many more applicants than there is room for, the criteria for making "the list" have to be pretty severe.

Historically, there have been a few major considerations. First and foremost is location. Indiana teams get an automatic boost to their "IRI-worthiness" score. Then there's performance. How many awards, how many wins, that sort of thing.

The other big one is sort of a wild card: what does the team bring to IRI that makes it a more exciting and interesting event? Hall of Fame teams have prestige even in an "off" year trophy-wise. The Israelis a couple of years ago added an international flavor (Canadia almost doesn't count as international anymore). A team might also contribute technical resources or have a reputation for an amazing talent show entry.

If a team stands out among the other members of the FIRST community, it will definitely be taken into account.

Yeah Anne, way to let the rest of us down! 2337 was our last hope that we'd be able to defend DC from the Midwest.

Spoiler for offtopic:

Edit: Sorry for tangent. Just got me thinking of what the alliance pairings would have looked like if 2337 wins that match (also makes 1629 and 768, both captains, lose their last match). Picks are based on 45 and 234 declining 2337 (no offense Anne) and my speculations about who each team would then select.
1-2337, 272, 53
2-45, 365, 620
3-234, 2068, 1731
4-7, 1629, 1727
5-339, 2199, 116
6-1712, 768, 176
7-1279, 118, 538
8-597, 122, 346

1v8, 1 wins. Bit of a toss-up.
2v7, 2 wins.
3v6. 3 wins
4v5. 5 wins.

1v5. 5 wins.
2v3. Fun match-up. I'll give it to 2.

2v5. 2 wins.

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

It's 2377 and we gave it our all. We managed to miss it by only 8 points eventhough we played that match down one team (through no fault of that team).

I would disagree with this type of scoring as it gives an advantage to those robots that shoot over those which chose a different design/game play, and sensing the importance of the human player, chose a design to load a human player and let them do the scoring rather than score itself.

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

This year shark attack was told that we should think about applying and we definately are thinking . The main problem is money . We still have to raise a ton to get to nationals because it is $500 per person as it stands right now.
