So what does the heads-up display do?

is it just lights that tell you different things about what's going on. for instance one light comes on when target is in range?

or is ther more to it?

It's pretty simple. The LEDs on the outside are red, nearer to the middle are blue (amber was not bright enough) and green in the middle when the camera finds the target. Not very fancy, but it sure helped our "vertically-challenged" gunner "see" the target.
