Driving to FL... ...working on the DrJoeIndex...
Posted by Joe Johnson at 03/31/2001 1:25 AM EST
Engineer on team #47, Chief Delphi, from Pontiac Central High School and Delphi Automotive Systems. Well... I am off to FL by way of a stop at the In-Laws in GA. I am going to keep busy during the drive (when my wife is driving and the kids are not screaming ;-) by trying to formulate a DrJoeIndex for each team at the Nationals. The DrJoeIndex would go something like this: Calculate every team's average score at a regional (already done). Calculate every team's standard deviation for their scores at each regional (easily done). The DrJoeIndex is then calculated as follows: The sum over all Matches of The sum over all partners of (the score for that match - the partner's average score) / the partner's standard deviation Once I have each team's DrJoeIndex, I will rank calculate DrJoesRank based on the index. The idea behind the DrJoeIndex is to calculate the aid (or anti-aid) a team gave to the alliance by giving a team more points for helping alliance partners beat their average while taking points away for holding alliance partners below their average. I am not seriously considering this a real method of calculating a team's rank at a competition, but I am curious about how to calculate a team's "true" contribution to the alliance. I am sure that everyone can think of examples where teams that seem good are ranked low as well as examples teams that seem so-so were ranked near the top. I am interested to see if there is some method of teasing out this kind of thing from the data. It will be a fun way to pass the time in any case. Stop by the pits in FL to see if I have found any diamonds in the rough (if they and you are not in Curie Div. I may even name names! ;-) See you in FL. Joe J. |

It'll be interesting to see what the 2 sets of conclusions look like! ~ lora |

Posted by Joe Johnson on 03/31/2001 1:25 AM EST: Sounds like a really fun drive down to Florida... I wish I could drive to Florida myself, but few reasons forbid me to do such thing: First I don't have a driver's license because I never really like cars. Second the drive will be too long for me to get back for my two midterms the Tuesday right after Nationals. Third I have to study Multivariable Calculus on the way to Florida... Hope you have fun working with the index, and with kids on your side. See you in Florida. |

My stats teacher loves it....If I had the time, I'd do that, but I'll try to come up with something else to compliment it. -Jessica B, #237 |

Posted by Joe Johnson on 03/31/2001 1:25 AM EST: Love the idea! It sort of reminds me of total average in baseball (although the computation sounds more like the QB index in football). One suggestion, though: wouldn't it make more sense to average a team's ranking over the number of matches? That would give a number that can more easily be compared between teams that have played different numbers of matches. |
