Spur Gears for Bosch and FP

Posted by Matt Reiland at 04/09/2001 9:05 AM EST

Engineer on team #226 from Troy, Troy Athens and General Motors CRW.

Can anyone give me some info on the mating spur gears to the FP and Bosch motors for building your own transmission. I saw so many great looking compact designs, I want to do some experimenting this summer

Any help is greatly appreciated

Matt

Fisher Price
Full Depth
Pressure Angle: 20 degree
Diametral Pitch: 32 (teeth per inch of diameter)
Number of Teeth: 16 (on most -- some strays exist)

Drill Motor
Full Depth
Pressure Angle: 20 degree
Module: .7 (mm of diameter per tooth)
Number of Teeth: 12

By the way: Module*Diametral Pitch = 25.4

Good Luck.

Joe J.

I have to agree with you about the Fisher Price motor, but I found that the Bosch motor had a 36 diametral pitch or a .70556 Module.

I have seen the blueprint (don't ask me how I came to see it).

The gear is not an English 36 DP gear but a metric 0.7 module.

I have it on good authority though that after much noisy grinding with very aggressive lapping compound, it will eventually mate with a 36 DP gear.

I don't recommend this practice, but I have been told that it can be made to work, so who am I?

Bank on it though, 0.7 Module.

Joe J.

Thanks Joe, I just wanted to double check with you. I know some of the teams had problems with the Bosch motor gear pitch. This should clear up any questions.

Thanks again,
Brent- team 279

After Dr. Joe posted the info last year, we decided to make our own this year. .7 Module worked like a champ. Our machine was rather noisy, but we didn't have to deal with those nasty gear boxes.

I hope this isn't way out there but this year were you allowed to use some of the gears (6)towards the 'timing pully's' allowed in additional hardware or did you have to make a gear that mated to the BOSCH? I am not sure about what small parts sells to mate to the pinions, I guess I have to look into it a little more.

My electrical backround is failing me right now

Thanks anyone who can help

There is only one source I am aware of that sells metal 0.7 Module gears off the shelf (PIC-Design.com).

Sadly, they are not on the "approved" source list for FIRST stuff.

So... the only way I know of to get a mate for the pinion on the Drill Motor is to have one made from raw material that IS legal FIRST stuff (e.g. 1/4 steel plate -- unlimited and no grade of steel specified, hurray!)

If you contact wire EDM sources, you may be able to find a local source that will burn you a gear for not much more than what Small Parts Inc. sells their gears for.

Believe it or not, all but the largest of our gears were burned for less than $50 each, very competitive with what Small Parts Inc. charges.
