Those are the side shields that FIRST gives the volunteers. I know that at LA for the past two years volunteers were told not to hand them out. They are by no means safe.

Re: Safety Goggles headaches..

Like many others have said, purchase your own. Go to menards or fleetfarm, home depot(stores here in MN not sure if they exist in other places0, or any other hardware store. On most of the glasses you can open them up and try them on, fell how they are like. I own myself 4 pairs of glasses, (A FIRST pair from the first store, a pair for when I wear contacts that are nice and rounded, and two others that are meant to go over my glasses)

A lot of the time, I forget that I am wearing them. That is either because I am used to wearing glasses or just cause I have them sit on my face so comfortable that I forget that they are on. Many times I have walked into McDonalds or some hardware stores and gotten some weird looks, even walk in my house and my parent ask me why I'm still wearing my safety glasses all because I picked them out.

Re: Safety Goggles headaches..

I too find that most safety glasses I've tried give me headaches after a while, due to pinching of the earpiece on my head. (I think I must have a slightly larger than average head size.) Fortunately, I've found a style that I like that doesn't give me headaches. The ones I wear are BOAS, which I bought from Safety Glasses USA (they're probably available elsewhere too, though I have not seen them at Home Depot/Lowes/OSH).

http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/sear...rchsubmit =Go

They come in a few different colors (check the rules for which lens colors are legal). I like the clear lens w/ smoke frame, or clear lens with clear frame, but if I'm outside (not at FIRST), I'll use the smoke lens with smoke frame.

Re: Safety Goggles headaches..

The model I have that goes over my glasses pinches very hard. I've heard of people taking a lighter and melting / shaping the plastic a little bit on the part that goes around the ears, but I've never actually tried that.

I've tried safety glasses with gel ends, those were comfy to wear.

Don,
I completely agree. For as much trouble as we go through as FIRSTers to ensure that everyone is protecting their eyes at the proper times, I can't believe this hasn't become a larger issue yet.

The "side shields" they give to people at competitions will do very little if a piece of metal is flying in that direction. I've seen some very legitimate side shields that will absolutely protect someones eyes, but the ones that you are referring to are borderline useless.

On top of that, I see many people with glasses and those flimsy sideshields...I find it hard to believe that all of these people have forked over the money for the ANSI certified variety of glasses. Making sure everyone is wearing something on or near their eyes is not what needs to happen...we need to make sure that everyone is PROTECTING their eyes. This includes the flimsy side shields, non-certified glasses lenses, sunglasses, ski goggles etc. If they aren't certified, they shouldnt count as "protection".

Thats just my .02 on this matter.

Brando

Re: Safety Goggles headaches..

Has anyone found a pair of safety glasses that are very good optically? As a photographer lower quality optics between my eye and the viewfinder tend to cause problems. I know that it is horrible but in our shop if I am taking pictures of people working I do not wear safety glasses for this reason. My exact logic is, if whatever it is can burrow through 4 inches of plastic and metal safety glasses wont do anything. Obviously when the camera is not in front of my eyes I wear safety glasses. I would like to stop being a bad example but haven't found any safety glasses meeting my criteria.

The optical quality may also be causing headaches for some people, I know from experience that looking at a blurred picture will give me horrible headaches, I imagine if the whole world was like that (bad optical quality) it would cause me some major problems.

Cleaning chemicals can also cause major problems, I know that I dont let anyone clean my glasses, I insist on doing it myself with the same cloth I use for my lenses and some soapy water. The last time I cleaned the aluminum body of my computer I used rubbing alcohol and it caused me to be dizzy and have a bad headache for a couple hours. Some people are incredibly sensitive to scent.

The best solution for this problem is going out and trying on pairs of glasses until you find one that doesnt hurt, then buy 4 of them (You will inevitably scratch them or lose them and they will no longer be made) And remember, these are your EYES we are talking about, by a quality pair or two, dont skimp on them, you only get one set of eyes and it would really stink to lose them.

One thing I've noticed that's a real pain is after a few long days of comptetition, the tops of my ears where the safety glasses rest becomes raw and sore. Anyone else have this happen?

They allow for normal vision unless they're incredibly dirty, and are very comfortable if they fit right. Just be careful with them; I wear mine A LOT (probably more than most people do), and they're fairly scratched up.

Of course, glasses that are too big, small, or continually slip down your nose are never good, and cause problems such as the headaches you seem to get. You may have to do a bit of searching to find a pair that fits you well, but it'll be worth it.

For competition season, I use these. They're pretty much the same as the other glasses that I use, but they're imagery compliant for my team and they look a bit more professional.

The pair I got from harbor freight for about $7, which have a cord to keep them around your neck (I think it's the only pair like that) are very good optically - but only "very good".

My $300 prescription ANSI-approved safety glasses could have been made with plain lenses (if I wasn't so blind!), those are optically excellent, and reasonably unobtrusive relative to camera eyepieces. Unfortunately, the Delta-$ is quite high.

I have yet to find the ideal pair of safety glasses. The bigger variety fall off of my smallish head. The smaller ones either pinch my nose or behind my ears. Still searching... let me know if you come up with a good solution.

Re: Safety Goggles headaches..

These are the glasses that we used last year. They have indoor/outdoor lenses, so they make the arena light much less intense on your eyes, and helped with glare down on the field. Also, I work in landscaping, and I use them as sunglasses at the same time to keep my eyes more covered than regular sunglasses. They are very comfortable to wear, and to go along with what other have said, I often forget that I am wearing them!

http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/sg-14io.html

Unfortunately, in Atlanta, several of the head safety advisers (but not the one in our division) deemed them unsafe, as they thought they were mirrored, and they wouldn't let us in our own pit with them on. Mind you, we had won the safety award in Philadelphia, and no one had ever said anything there or at FLR.

As a solution, we found the same exact frames with clear lenses this year. Not as much fun, but at least we won't get yelled at again.

Re: Safety Goggles headaches..

i totally agree that safey glasses cause headaches
but i think the reason i get mine is because i wear contacts as well, which might bother my eyes :S
but i also get pains at the back of my head when i wear them for too long
