Working in the pits

Other on team #433, Firebirds, from Mount Saint Joseph Academy and SCT Corp., FMC Corp..

I was a bit surprised by the announcements that you could not use tools in the pits that produced chips or shavings. That severely limited the repairs/changes you could make to your robot. And judging by the time it took to get a few holes drilled in one sprocket, I don’t think the machine shop was an option for major repairs. Although this was our first nationals, we didn’t come across such a limitation at the Philly regional this year or last. Was this a requirement at other regionals or at past nationals? Based on some of the tools I saw in other pits, it looked like it was a surprise to quite a few teams.

All that we really noticed at the VCU regionals was the restriction of soldering in the pits (which we violated to get a control box running in under 5 minutes, because a match was coming soon). I noticed a lot of teams ignoring the rules, too, so I can't really say anything about Nationals.

ahhh but they never said you couldn't go outside to do drill, cutting, etc. i noticed some teams using those portable lights as tables.
